We stayed only for one night in this excellent hotel. we were so glad that the Sarkie brothers have also left their footprint in Indonesia with the fornmer Oranje Hotel. Th grandeur in colonial times can hardly have matched the one of today.
The staff (Marinda) was extremely helpful in locating the adress, where my father used to live in the forties, based on a photo and a non existing address. Thanks to her, I found a bit of my roots.
The upgrade tot a suite was worth the additional RP 200K. Beuatiful furniture and bathroom.
The swimmingpool is large, though a bit lacking of shade.
The colonial atmosphere with all its replicas (I assume) in the interior design was very tasteful. Also the restaurant was a treat. No negative word about the Majahapit, with the exception of the price of wine, but where not in Indonesia?

Room tip: an upgrade to a suite for RP 200K is really worth it

Great hotel - lots of characters, friendly staff, strategic location, good food, and the price is very reasonable. There are many other less expensive (or more expensive) options, but for us coming from North America, the price is definitely much less than 5-star here!
Indigo is great for breakfast and Sarkies is one of the best chinese restaurant around.

Room tip: Rooms on the second floor have better view from the balcony

We stayed overnight at Majapahit in Surabaya after a very hectic trip to Mount Bromo. It was the perfect place to unwind. We loved the colonial architecture, long elegant corridors, large courtyards, and the little details in the room. Friendly staff, good restaurant. We couldn't try the Martha Tilaar spa though I wanted to, because there wasn't enough time.

If ever a hotel's popularity was down to its history, architecture and the beauty of its grounds then this is it - they are all stunning and cannot be faulted, nor can the rooms. Unfortunately along the way the quality of service and attention to detail you might hope for has been lost and the bag carriers and bell boys know more about hospitality than the reception staff. More geared to the local businessman and conferences, if you end up in Surabaya as a tourist for one night it is worth it just to say you have been there, but probably not worth staying much longer unless you have to. Make sure you get a good discount on the advertised rate.

Room tip: Garden rooms at the back, opposite the Presidential suite, seem quieter with more sitting-out space.

Yet another wonderful stay at the Majapahit. Truly I think this is one of the great hotels of the world. I thought so before but on returning it was even better, everyone seemed to remember us and make us truly welcome.
The new bar and executive lounge is additional touches toward this perfection.
It is surprising to me, that Surabaya has such a gem, and unlike so many other “historic” or “heritage” hotels it is in good condition and remains basically as it was. You literally feel history is surrounding you.
Our modus has been to stay at the Majapahit then travel to the less salubrious parts of Indonesia, getting us prepared for what is or may be to come!, and then a stop off on the way back to recover from the hard-ships of our travels! . It takes some beating, and perhaps amplifies the charms.
Food is uniformly good, not great but more than satisfying, but the degree of “customisation” makes it stand apart. I am a difficult eater; I like my meat, eggs etc. very well done, part of my Scottish roots. Simple to say but rarely delivered but once ordered every time later, nothing needed to be said it arrived exactly as I wished it to be.
Now the wait for my next visit!!!
