“Don't go during Singapore's school holidays”

Bintan Lagoon Resort

2 Jul 2008

As I have a school-going child, I had no choice but to go during the school holidays in June this year. We booked 2 inter-connecting rooms for a 4D/3N stay. There were 3 adults and 3 children in my group.

The bus that brought us to the resort was in bad shape, very old, creaky and the air-con didn't seem to be working, we were like in a hot sauna. Check-in at the resort was ok and staff was friendly.

The rooms were surprisingly big. We had a king bed and there was plenty of space, there was a raised platform where 2 huge pillows and a small coffee-table was placed, that gave us plenty of space to put our luggage and the kids' sand-toys. We also had a veranda at the back of the room which overlooked the garden and I thought it was thoughtful of the resort to install metal bars for hanging wet clothes or swimsuits.

The room was clean but the bathfoom smelled funky, apparently the smell came from the shower curtain which looked mouldy and God knows had not been changed since the resort opened?? The bathtub had stains and scratches. The flush was very weak and we had an embarrassing moment when we had to call maintenance to sort out the flush. The safe in our room didn't work but since we had an inter-connecting room, we merely used the safe in the other room.

Apart from the bathroom, I liked it that the tv had plenty of movie channels, they had S'porean channels, HBO, and most importantly of all, Cartoon Network for the kids. I also noticed they had Japanese and Korean channels.

I would strongly urge you NOT to holiday at this resort (if you can) during the June and December school holidays. If you are a foreigner and reading this, check out Singapore's Ministry of Education's website to find out when exactly are the school holidays. The whole resort was over-run with noisy kids (including mine) and their parents. The room walls were so filmsy that we could hear everything and everybody that walked from the 3rd floor to the 1st floor, we had sleepless nights as the sounds amplified in the night. I think the resort should at least soundproof their floors and walls a little to block out noise. Children and adults were laughing, talking, shouting and screaming at their top of their voices whilst going back to their rooms and we had 3 sleepless nights listening to the noise pollution. Even if someone closed their room-door the sound echoed and filtered through the entire corridor.

I thought the food prices was expensive. They had a kids menu and the standard price was $10 (everything is in Singapore Dollars, you do not have to change to Indonesian currency). However I must admit that the portions were big, if you have a 5 or 6 year old, they can actually share a plate of whatever you order from the kids menu, come to think of it, even an adult can eat from the kids menu and be full. The main restaurant always had a buffet and I think since they want to push you to have the buffet, they had few choices on the a-la-carte menu. It was mostly fried noodles of different styles and maybe a steamed rice with some curry dish. They had a lot of Indian selection on the menu which didn't interest me as well as expensive western food.

We never had the buffet as the prices were simply exorbitent. I think lunch was going for about $26 and dinner was about $36 (or close to that figure).

Each time we ate at the main restaurant Kopi-O, it was like sitting in a sauna, there is simply no ventilation at all and within 5 minutes, you are perspiring like crazy. The wall mounted fans doesn't work at all, the resort should try to install some fan-blowers which blows out cool air, it was terrible eating there and we always wanted to get out fast. Your clothes and hair will also stink of food after you leave the restaurant.

Bk'fast was ok, they had the usual asian fare like fried noodles, nasi lemak, porridge, egg station, breads, cakes, fruits and juices, just like any other hotel bk'fast.

They have 2 pools in different parts of the hotel. A very large pool at the main hotel and the other pool with a slide near the activity centre which is more for kids.

The beach was nice too, the kids had a nice time there, white sand but water not too clear. They had jet-ski, beach volleyball, banana boat ride and wind-surfing.

Overall my 3 kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves as the pool was huge that even if it's crowded, you don't feel the crowd. My only gripe was the filmsy thin walls, exorbitent food prices and bad ventilation at the restaurant. We spent $600 only on food for 3 adults/2 kids (my 3rd kid is just a baby so he doesn't count) for a 4-day holiday here. Other than that it's a nice place to holiday in for relaxation, only just don't go during the school holidays if you can help it.

Dear Valued Guest,

Greetings from Bintan Lagoon Resort!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for staying at Bintan Lagoon Resort and for taking time to comment about us on TripAdvisor.com.

The Management of Bintan Lagoon Resort considers all comments, whether negative or positive as an essential part of our ongoing efforts to maintain and improve on our services. Your valuable feedback and contribution is greatly valued and appreciated. We know you care, so we do too. Your feedback will help us improve and be better.

We are heartened that you enjoyed the our beach, the swimming pool, wide variety of TV channels and our spacious rooms.

Please accept our sincere apology for your unsatisfactiry experience with the bathroom, bus transportation, dining ambience at Kopi-O restaurant and noise levels.

We have informed the respective Heads of Departments to step up their effort and look into the above issues which you have kindly highlighted above.

Our hotel is a very popular destination for Singaporeans, Indonesians and international travellers. As you have clearly pointed out June and Decemeber is Public School Holidays in Singapore. We enjoy good patronage of Singaporean families during these periods as we are a pro-family establishment.

We are aware that our food prices are comparable to that of other hotels in Singapore. This is mainly due to the quality ingredient and raw materials we import from Singapore. We import more than 80% of our Food & Beverage (F&B) ingredients from Singapore and with freight and custom duties imposed on them; this makes our price comparative to that of Singapore’s hotel (F&B) prices. Despite food prices increasing worldwide by 5% to 20% over the last few months, our resort is keeping our price constant. Our experienced chefs pride to serve good quality food and will not compromise on the quality.

I hope the above information have clarified the concerns that you have raised. Please be assured that we will monitor the various matters you have raised closely. Once again, we thank you for taking time to provide the feedback.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at +62 770 691388 or email me at prmanager@bintanlagoon.com should you need more information or require more assistance.

Many of the things / activities / F&B in the resort are over-priced, simply exorbitant / unrealistic. Staff are unfriendly and argumentative. I even had one of the staff attempting to enter my room with his own card-key after knocking 3-4 times!! Thank goodness I latched the door!!
Also, imagine having to pay S$5 for a can of coke, which is ridiculous, coming from a country with relatively low cost of living. Even back home in Singapore, we only pay this kind of price at 5 star hotels. And Bintan Lagoon Resort is nowhere near 4 star! I would strongly NOT recommend this place. You will have better use for your money spending it at Batam instead (e.g. Holiday Inn Batam). Or try other resorts at Bintan. And oh yes, another thing: the transfers to / fro the resort from the Bintan Ferry Terminal is horrible; the mini-buses are old and the air-con breaks down. Imagine sitting in a mini-bus without air-con in the hot afternoon sun. I have many more comments but I'll just stop here. I leave it to you to imagine...........*nightmare*

Bintan Lagoon resort might have been nice 20 years ago, but after just spending a weekend there I have to say that a weekend at my condo in singapore would have been more agreeable.

Bintan Lagoon should have been made over 10 years ago and is just never worth the $500 my wife, me and our todler spent there for one night stay and a meal.

Go to Phuket and spend the same amount for the sort of stay that I'm sure you have in mind. I think Bintan is in danger of losing the plot, when you can have a higher standard of accomodation in your own condo, the appeal of going to Bintan slips. yes there are great beaches but when you have to come back to a grubby room, no thanks. And we have the next to most expensive room at the resort!

“Grotty”

Bintan Lagoon Resort

9 Jun 2008

Very disapointed, the lobby on arrival looked great but our room was very grotty, moldy and not clean. we upgraded to a sea view deluxe room as well so goodness knows what the cheaper rooms are like.

This resort is expensive to eat at and breakfast was awful, too many people in a hot and stuffy room fighting to get food.

Beach is lovely but the pool facilities like the toilets were disgusting and I am sure not cleaned the who time we were there.

My 3 year old loved the children's pool and slides and the staff were very friendly , those are the only 2 good things I can think of apart from the beautiful beach, I would NOT recommend the hotel!

I tried to get into other resorts on the island but all except the (ridiculously priced) Club Med were booked solid. I went with my girlfriend for a weekend getaway and after reading the less than stellar reviews, expected the worst. The place is not bad at all.

We stayed in a Sea View Deluxe which was reasonably spacious and gave you a view of the sea through the trees. It was not right on the beach like I had hoped and I wished I could hear the crashing waves as I slept. There was a balcony to relax on and the grounds were well mantained--if a little lackluster in their landscape design.

The sand on the beach is amazing. White, baby-powder that gets barely hot even after the sun has been blazing on it all day. The water right in front of the resort is fine but with all the jetski and banana boat riding it is a bit churned up and not so clear. No worries, walk 10 minutes down the beach and no one is there! The water is crystal clear, no rocks, shallow quite a ways out, warm as can be--it was perfect.

I will say that the amount of screaming brat kids running around the resort gets a little tiring for a young couple like us. But that also is an easy fix: just stay away from the pool. Or at least stay in the deep end. The pool is very nice and spacious and it seems that there may even be 2 pools--with the great beach we didn't even bother with the pools at all.

The food was average. A bit overpriced but not highway robbery. Breakfast had a pretty good variety, but the quality there was average as well. We went to The Kelong for seafood dinner (at the Nirwana resort) and it was pretty good. I recommend you get a live fish.

The rooms are clean and adequate. The decor is horrific. 70's Miami Vice crap with laughable art on the walls that looks like it was photocopied out of a magazine of clown illustrations. Staff was accomodating. Overall the hotel could use a renovation just to make it look more chic and modern--but hey, if they did that it would no longer be 150 USD a night, would it?
