We stayed at the merlin beach resort for a girls holiday - four women minus husbands and kids - in June 2008. On arrival the check in and service was outstanding. We were greeted with a cold drink and refreshing hand towel and made to feel very welcome. The hotel staff were wonderful and I felt humbled to be treated so well.
We stayed twin share and the room was superb - very clean with great decor and a nice view over the pool. Use of the safe was welcome, though we had to pay extra for that as it wasn't included in the superior room price. But it wasn't too expensive between two people. The laundry service was outstanding and very convenient though a little expensive.
The food in Thailand doesn't cater much for the Aussie cuisine as is to be expected. The resort had very nice menus, though a warning - the steak isn't as great as what you'd expect from a restaurant back home. The Thai people also seem to like mixing a strong drink too so be wary!
The pool was fabulous and the pool bar was wonderful. However it was on most occasions littered with tattooed Aussies. Actually I came to the impression from my stay that most Aussies in Thailand are tatooed bourbon drinking bogans. Some were really loud and embarrassing - rather cringe worthy.
I didn't expect to be able to swim at the Merlin beach resort - the beach is very rocky, though scenic and i and my friends were fortunate enough to find a coconut floating in the ocean and managed to fish it out and crack it open - fun experience for all!
The hotel was renovating its seafood restaurant at the time we stayed there and while we were assured that it would be quiet - it wasn't with jackhammers, rubble and paint fumes. but it wasn't too bad - and hey if it was well we could have moved to another pool!
Breakfast was broad in range and there was always plenty. Though a bit disappointed that the coffee wasn't a little better - minor glitch. The service was usually very good for breakfast too.
It was nice to stay out of Patong. Whilst the distance is only 3km it is a very hilly climb so it can take about 20 minutes to get from the resort to town in a tuk tuk.
being a girls holiday we just had to try the merlin resort spa. It was amazing and well priced too. I strongly recommend the thai massage with herbal compress. 90 minutes of absolute bliss and the best massage experience ever.
there is internet access at one of the hotel bars. I used this once and it was pretty easy - 150 baht for 30 minutes - about $5 australian. though to my shock i wasn't able to print which was a problem considering i was booking a hotel on wotif back home.
my most significant piece of travel advice is to be wary of excess luggage. Thai airways charged me $20 australian per kilo. I was only allowed 25kg in economy (i thought it was 30kg). They also overcharged me and I ended up with a bill of $300 for excess luggage. So my advice is to invest in the biggest piece of carry on luggage that you possibly can and stuff it full to the maximum! If I had done this I would have saved myself around $200 without a doubt! With increasing fuel prices I have no doubt that this is the way of the future as airlines will slug you for excess luggage to recoup costs.
But otherwise - I would stay at the Merlin beach resort again - it was friendly, well priced, well located and out of the seediness of patong.
