My family and I stayed at the Thara recently and enjoyed most things about our stay. We were upgraded from a deluxe to a premium room which was exceptionally spacious and well-furnished. Beds were very comfortable as was the two seater couch. The bathroom was also large but lacked storage space. Water pressure in the shower was virtually a drip. The upgrade we thought was a bonus until we stepped out on our balcony. We were in room 1454 on the fourth floor, overlooking the dolphin pool. As three adults, it was impossible to sit out on the balcony as there was no room. My son had to sit inside when we sat out ... these balconies happened to be the WORST in the whole resort as they were one third of the size of the standard balconies - disappointing as we had specifically requested a room with a good sized balcony - I later discovered that the deluxe rooms had the larger size balconies so we felt that our 'upgrade' was more of a negative! As with many other resorts in Patong (this is our 7th trip and the 6th resort we have stayed at) we found that the universal 'lounge hogs' were at their annoying best - towels were left to 'mark their territory' and left there for hours on end with nobody actually using the lounge chair - really annoying when there is nothing else available to relax on. I do suggest that management do something about this and ensure that any unattended lounges have items removed for collection by the 'hog' if not used within the hour - this would make more lounge chairs available to other guests. Pool towels were another problem - no fresh ones available - had to use the same sopping wet towel for the whole day - not nice! Breakfast was ordinary to say the least and trying to get eggs cooked the way you wanted was a drama ... I especially dislike the non-availability of 'soft' bacon - not all people enjoy the crispy version! On the second day our safe would not open and we had to spend three hours of our holiday time, waiting for staff to fix it - consequently, a new battery was required - which needed to be bought elsewhere. The real positive of the Thara is its location - to the north of Bangla Rd and close to the action (although, given the alcohol ban due to the elections during our stay, Bangla Road was virtually a ghost town and no bars were open for our entire stay). The swimming pools were wonderful but unfortunately the spa in the smaller pool did not work). Staff at reception were friendly enough but on the day of checkout I had an exceptionally rude receptionist call the room to ask when we were checking out. The call came at 1pm but we had been told that we could checkout at 2pm (this was because I requested an extension due to the inconvenience of the safe being broken and the time wasted to fix the problem). On explaining this to the young lady, I was rudely cut off and hung up on - I did mention this to the reception manager when checking out, and the young lady who had been so rude denied that she had been rude and hung up - unprofessional and very bad customer empathy! She was giggling and speaking Thai to the other staff whilst I spoke to the supervisor. Management should ensure that reservation staff are trained to provide excellent servise to customers - not laugh and mock them. Overall, our stay could have been a lot better but was acceptable enough. Would I stay at the Thara again? Yes ... because of its location, but I would have to make sure that the balcony was facing the dolphin pool and the beach and was the larger balcony.
Make sure that whichever room you decide upon, if you like to enjoy a nice balcony and a view, then...

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your experience with us. Your comments have been reviewed by our entire management team and well noted. It is important for us the listen to all our Valued Guests. The balcony can be a bit of an issue for some people that like to spend time out there. For many guests they are not interested in the balcony, for many other guests the balcony is a main feature to our Resort. We sympathize and understand your disappointment. However that is why I and others are here. I only wish you would have brought this issue to my attention. I am sure we could have found something to your liking. We sincerely apologize if in any way our reception gave the impression of being rude. They were only checking to see if you, our Valued Guest were still planning on the 2pm C/O. Scheduling check-outs, available rooms, check-ins, and late check-outs is a complicated undertaking for Hotels with many rooms and high occupancy. This however is never an excuse for Resort colleagues to be rude. Sometimes there is a cultural miscommunication and what we see as being rude is nothing more than a very shy personality. Thai will almost always giggle when they are nervous. I assure you our Resort colleagues mean no disrespect, they are simple shy… really. We hope to see you and your family in the future and look forward in serving you.
Happy Travels! Sincerely, Bryan Duty Manager
