Some of the earlier reviews about the Baumanburi Hotel in Patong on Phuket had me worried, as they sounded horrible. But the construction on the hotel's room expansion project is essentially complete and as such my stay was excellent! My room was brand new, beautifully furnished, and I even had a view to the bay (not a wide-open view, obviously, as the hotel is set back by a long block from a bay-front location, but still I could see it-- I was on the 6th floor of the seven-story back building). The location on the town's main street put me within walking distance of all the attractions, and the beach was about five to ten minutes away by foot through lots of interesting shops, etc. The staff could not have been friendlier, and I received service with a huge smile whenever I had any requests. The breakfast buffet was plentiful (there was a large selection, with the egg station being my favorite); like every hotel in which I've stayed in Thailand, the coffee could be better-- but a Starbucks was down the street about ten minutes by foot so I survived. One hidden attraction was the open-air restaurant on the ground level near the reception: the food was outstanding, as the chef prepared many varieties of local fish with typical Thai flavors; the price was very good, and I was surprised that there were not more diners. (This restaurant should have a much larger patronage given its quality and price. It is likely due to the location of the hotel near the southern end of the long main drag through town, and the fact that it was a hotel-based restaurant. I was told there are plans to locate the restaurant to what is now the front parking area, and that should bring this place to the attention of more diners.) So, all in all, great stay: location in the middle of everything, excellent value for the money, friendly staff. I could not have been more pleased and I recommend the Baumanburi to anyone going to Patong who wants a good, clean, well-managed and customer-friendly hotel that offers excellent value for the price.
