“FANTASTIC! HIDDEN GEM. GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY.”
I led a group of 19 work colleagues, partners and family members on a business trip to Patong in early May 2012 for 8 nights. I had very polite and efficient email communication with the hotel in the months prior to our trip.
We all arrived at various times during the day, but this did not concern the staff one bit. They were well prepared. When I arrived, I was very impressed with the size and standard of the rooms. Everyone in our group was similarly impressed. We all stayed in the ground floor pool access rooms and they are huge. They are very well appointed with large bathrooms, lovely big baths and amazing hot showers. The service was fantastic and the staff were very polite and helpful.
I find that when travelling in any country where the local language is not your first language, it is respectful to at least learn and speak a few basic phrases, like 'hello', 'please' and 'thank you' in the local language. It goes a long way with the locals and sets you apart from 'ugly tourists'. Well, it is no different in Thailand. The Thai people are very friendly and the hotel staff at Patong Paragon seemed to really appreciate this effort to say a few phrases in Thai.
When we arrived, we each received a free welcome drink (non-alcoholic) voucher, a one-off 15% discount food and beverage voucher, and a free 1 kilogram Thai tropical fruit voucher. Wonderful! We each chose the fruit from the display in the foyer and one of the staff then cut and packed the fruit into a nice container for us to take to our rooms to eat at our leisure.
The buffet breakfast is terriffic and one of the best I have experienced. All nice and fresh. Lots of choices from hot international dishes, asian noodle and rice, dim sum, cold meats and salads, fruit salad, youghurt, rice dishes, all sorts of breads and pastries. It really was impressive and changed from day to day so there was always something new to try. As with a lot of good hotels in Thailand, there was an omelette chef who cooked eggs, omelettes, bacon, sausages, etc to order. Brewed coffee was free, but automatic coffee machine espresso was extra. It would have been nice if that was free but I didn't bother with it because the coffee that is produced by those machines is not that great anyway.
The rooms are cleaned and serviced once daily but at varying times. The hotel has a small cleaning staff who are thorough and very friendly, but because there is not an army of cleaning staff, don't expect your room to be cleaned at exactly the same time every day. We were usually out for most of the day, so it didn't concern us.
The hotel pool is fantastic and it was so great to just open your room sliding door and walk straight into the pool.
The beds are king size and on the firmer side, which is pretty standard in Asia. I like a firm bed, but some of our group commented that their beds were too firm for their liking.
This hotel is in a nice location at the quiet north end of Patong Beach away from the noise of Bangla Road. It is literally just across the road from the beach and only about a 10 minute stroll down to Bangla Road. You can get a tuk-tuk (taxi) right outside the hotel to anywhere in Patong for 120-200 Baht, if you don't feel like walking. There is a great restaurant opposite the hotel on the beach, Bann Kalim Restaurant & Seafood, that is well worth a visit. Lots of shops, cafes, laundries, pharmacies, etc nearby. There is a 7Eleven right opposite which is well stocked.
The hotel spa (for massage, treatments, etc - not the pool spa) was only open by appointment made with reception. However, plenty of massage shops nearby.
There are some nice quiet areas in the hotel to relax. The comfy couches in the lobby are great when waiting for anyone or just to relax and watch the world go by.
We were provided with complimentary free wifi, which was a very nice gesture by the hotel.
All the taxi and tuk tuk drivers knew where the hotel was, so there was no issue there, but be aware that a lot of the roads in Patong are one-way, so what can seem as a long way to get to your hotel can sometimes be necessary. You should not be charged anymore than 200 baht to go anywhere by taxi in Patong.
It is worth noting that some things do not happen instantaneously in Thailand, and many other countries for that matter! Be prepared to wait a little longer than you may be used to for things to happen. That is just the Thai way. You can't enjoy life and be happy like the Thai people if you are stressed about things not appearing within seconds of being ordered. I found that if you were polite to the staff, used simple english phrases and spoke slowly, there was no problem at all.
I highly recommend this hotel.
Go for a pool access room. They are worth the extra cost.
