I just got back from a week at the Hotel Zenith, and I am in love. After reading the reviews (both the English ones and the French ones), we were a little concerned about our trip. Musty towels? Lackluster animation?? Salmonella??? But as poor college kids, we decided to chance it, and I'm so glad we did. My week at Le Zenith was probably the best vacation I've ever had. And I kinda wanna go back. Like... NOW.
I went with 3 of my friends (all aged 20-21), and we had a really excellent time despite the fact that we were probably the only ones there who were a) under the age of 25, or b) without parental supervision. So if you're of our age and looking to meet a whole lot of other college kids, this might not be the way to go. We were, however, of roughly the same age as the majority of the animation staff, and they did everything they could to make sure we were entertained at all times from playing petonque in the mid afternoon to twisting our arms to go to the discotheque ate night. Special thanks to Bobo, Didou, Riad, and Ali for that. Those boys are SO much fun. We obviously didn't have young kids with us, but I strongly recommend the hotel for families. The animateur who runs MiniClub is tireless in his efforts -- constantly running, constantly letting himself be abused by the kids -- they LOVE him, and we relished the call to MiniDisco every night (let's talk about adorable). In honesty, the spectacles each night were a bit like going to your little brother or sister's Christmas concert. But they were enjoyable, especially when you considered all the hardwork that the animateurs were putting into them. They were trying really hard, and it showed. I swear they never sleep.
As for the food, we were expecting the worst when we came in, even packing snacks of our own in case it was inedible as other reviewers were suggesting. Quite to the contrary, the food was delicious. Everything was well cooked and clean. Every night there was something new to try. I'm a vegetarian, and was pleased to discover that there was a multitude of food that I could eat... and not just at the salad bar either. Even the waitstaff was unbelievably friendly.
The rooms were very clean. They weren't luxurious necessarily, but they were more than adequate for a 3* hotel. I love a firm bed, and they certainly were, so it might not be terribly comfortable for a soft matress lover, but how much time will you spend in the room anyway? We got clean towels every day, and they were NOT musty. The cleaning ladies were extremely nice, and a little kindness goes a long way. They work very hard, and it's only fair to leave them a small tip. As a token of their appreciation, they often folded stray clothes, decoratively made our beds, and left fresh flowers on our pillows. The entire place is VERY clean. Including the pool area, which is gorgeous, covered with umbrellas and chairs (you don't have to pay for mats) with plenty of recreation areas.
The beach left a bit to be desired, perhaps because we didn't go during high season. There were no chairs or umbrellas out in April. But, in honesty, you probably don't need them. We walked up and down all of the beaches on that stretch of coast and determined that ours had the BEST sand we'd ever encountered. Although we didn't do any watersports (we had some days that were too chilly), the water sport staff did come over to us to chat for awhile as we were the only people on the beach, and they were also extremely friendly.
All in all, I loved my stay at the hotel Zenith. Tunisia is a beautiful country, and the people are all extremely friendly, even to English speakers (we had heard they weren't, especially to Americans, so we spoke entirely in French. They, of course, knew our accents weren't pure though, and when they found out we were from America, they were even more enthralled). Three star hotel, perhaps. But it was a five star experience.
