Just came back from the Al Hambra full of praise and recommending it to everyone we know. I went with my boyfriend last week and have nothing bad to say about the place. We had been warned that 5 Stars in Tunisia = 4 Stars elsewhere; this is NOT the case. It well deserves the 5 Stars it was awarded.
The beach is 2 minutes walk down the road, with a Tuk-Tuk but really not worth it due to the closeness of the beach. There is a private section with bar and restaurant and sun loungers - free towels for the beach and pool of course - and we particularly liked the beach because it is at the end of the resort so very quiet. The odd couple and locals do walk past - it's a public beach - and there are of course jet skis and banana boats in the water, but most came from other hotels so weren't too close to the shore. Lovely warm, big waves to play in.
The rooms were spacious, clean and well-equipped. There was a TV which only had one English channel (BBC World) but one of the Arabic channels played films in English with Arabic subtitles so we watched that too. We had a sea view but it isn't worth paying more for it as, due to the angle of the hotel you won't see much! Our view was mainly of the pool with a lovely big balcony.
The grounds were stunning, full of flowers and birds and very green and lush. The interior was marble and palatial and had lots of cosy nooks with comfy chairs to hide away in if you wanted. The bar did have entertainment (piano player or keyboard player) some nights but you could either enjoy it or go and sit outside or in another area with your drinks.
We must have chosen a good time of year, not too hot and not too many guests, the only children arrived at the end of our week as half-term began in the U. K. - this was fine, we didn't want too many children around. The hotel does not offer much for children or families anyway, another reason we chose it.
My boyfriend made use of the spa and had a massage - you do have to pay extra for spa treatments. he said it was wonderful and was relaxed all day and the rest of the week! I was spoilt for choice with all the treatments on offer but, having had some before we left (pedicure etc) decided not to this time. Next time I will wait!
Prices for everything (spa and hotel) are in Euros and Tunisian Dinar so you can pay in whichever way is easiest for you.
All the staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for you. I am vegetarian and was dreading the fact I couldn't eat salads etc due to the water - no problem. The water offered is all bottled and we had no problems with salads, fruit etc, that is a myth! The one and only night there wasn't very much vegetarian for me at the buffet they noticed and - without my asking - brought out a specially prepared plate of vegetables in sauce for me! We ate at the buffet most nights due to the service and the huge choice. We ate at the a la carte one night and my boyfriend said the lamb was absolute heaven - again the service was superb and 5 Star. The pool cafe was lovely too. The only place we didn't eat was the beach restaurant and that was just because of the timings. The mini-bar was well-stocked and not too expensive and there was a small hotel shop where you could buy other snacks if you wanted. Additionally Yasmine has a supermarket (Bravo) where you can buy food. We wish we had gone half-board but our tour operator said we couldn't. We ate in the hotel nearly every night because we didn't see anything better we preferred in Yasmine. Breakfast wasn't fabulous but had plenty of choice still - we think they were slightly confused as to what people want to have for breakfast so offered a little of everything! Lunch and dinner were excellent. In the restaurants you can't wear shorts / vest tops (only at brekkie if you're off out) and we liked this too.
It wasn't a problem wearing whatever you wanted in Yasmine Hammamet as it is a tourist resort. We went in twice and found a great milkshake place but also went to Hammamet (half-hour taxi ride) and took a tour to Carthage, Tunis etc. We would NOT recommend you go with a tour operator, especially not on their tours or their planes. Clothes elsewhere e.g. Tunis, then be sensible I think - there's no need for a headscarf although I took one just in case we went to a mosque or anywhere I needed to cover up. Just take longer shorts and sleeved tee shirts, skirts, trousers etc or you will be stared at, but that's all.
