Spent a week at the Kervansaray Kundu (24/10/11-31/10/11) and left feeling extremely dissapointed. Throughout the week we were made to feel as if we were a burden on the staff and not at all welcome in the hotel. Although we stayed approaching the end of season, the hotel is still advertised as "all inclusive" and actually "fully open" until November 2011 - how wrong this really is. We wanted to leave a detailed review to help you make the right decision and avoid the Kervanasary Kundu from ruining your holiday too.
First impressions: Our check-in was unorganised and not very helpful. We were given our room key, but no information sheet or timings of when we could get something to eat/use the facilities or entertainment etc. After aimlessly walking around the resort for an hour trying to get something to eat, we eventually complained to our resort rep who supplied us with the info sheet she said we should have been given at reception. We'd missed out on lunch and afternoon snack so food wasn't available again until 7pm in the main restaurant (we hadn't eaten since 5am from leaving the UK) Unlike most other 'proper' all-inclusive hotels, food at this hotel isn't available all the time and only between the times stated... or, as it happened during our stay... if you were lucky.
On the plus side, we stayed on the 6th floor and overlooked the sea. The room was very clean and in a good state of repair, although our air con didn't work and made the room very hot and muggy, especially at night. Tip - Mosquitos were everywhere, take lots of repellent and hope for the best.
General hotel: Despite being very modern in design, the rest of the hotel is a let down. The communal areas are shabby and the carpets have filthy stains on them. The lifts (the ones actually working during our stay) have numerous loose tiles on the floor that will eventually cause an accident. The lift doors also strangely seem to open well before the lift actually reaches the floor you want and are very dangerous, especially for children. One of the lifts seemed to stall for a moment whilst we were inside, the rest juddered and made worrying screeching noises.
The bars: With the exception of the indoor bar, the rest were in a disgusting state during our stay. You'd literally stick to the bar tops. Glasses were filthy and had a 'dirty' smell about them, mainly the plastic ones served by the pools. The 'dirty' smell we noticed also accompanied a very sour taste with every drink served, presumably caused either by dirty glass wash machines or general poor pump cleanliness. Some of our drinks tasted so disgusting towards the end of our stay that we simply left the majority of them and were forced to drink the bottled water available (before they started removing the fridges). We also noticed other leaving their drinks.
Food: Food in general wasn't very good, the majority we found on offer was kept luke warm. Breakfast served in the main restaurant was allegedly from 0700-1000hrs. The restaurant seemed to open at 0630hrs and by 0830hrs, there was virtually nothing left or replaced when empty. On one morning when we did get to the restaurant at 0830hrs, oddly the "late breakfast" sign was out in the restaurant directing guests to sit in just one seating area only with virtually nothing left available to choose from. The restaurant didn't appear to be open for the true "late breakfast" as advertised on the info sheet from 1000-1100hrs. If you wanted a late morning lie-in, it was tough and you would not be able to get anything until lunch.
There was then no food until 1230-1430hrs where you could then choose to eat from the main restaurant, beach snack bar or from the Gozleme pancake lady. During our stay, the pancake lady closed down and didn't return from Wednesday onwards. Very dissapointing, despite being advertised as being available all week. The beach snack bar restaurant was a further dissapointment and only actually opened between 1230-1430, despite advertised as open between 1230-1630hrs! Again, the food quality wasn't up to what you'd expect and was generally cold and poor.
Ice creams were served every day at 16:00hrs for a pathetic 30 mins until Thursday. Again, after Thursday the staff packed away the ice cream stand and it was never seen again. A further dissapointment, especially as the info leaflet clearly stated it was available every day for an hour.
The Fish restaurant had closed down before we arrived at the hotel, the Italian Restaurant was only open until Wednesday and required a strict 24 hours booking in advance. You could only book the restaurant via the Guest Relations desk, which ridiculously only opens between 0900-1300hrs. We didn't even want to bother with the Turkish Restaurant (only opened Fri, Sat and Sun) as the menu looked too similar to what they served in the main hotel buffet restaurant. Yet another dissapointment to add to the increasing list of complaints.
Dinner in the hotel's main buffet restaurant wasn't great. Food was bland, usually cold although the BBQ outside was a welcome relief. Towards the end of the week, the food offering became the same as the previous night, but only half as much was available. Every night, during our stay - as the hotel became more and more deserted, the restaurant became a disgrace. Dirty cutlery, dirty plates, dirty *broken* glasses and our final Sunday night was a joke with virtually only two hot dishes to choose from, no BBQ which was a shame.
Entertainment: Non on offer. There was a complete lack of entertainment during our stay and you entertained yourself. We overhead many other guests complaining about the lack of entertainment during our stay, with many couples like us forced to spend every evening in our rooms. There was NOTHING to do in the hotel from 1700hrs onwards, unless you wanted a drink at the bars- which were empty, had no music or atmosphere and were dirty. The Havana Bar, Amphithetre and Disco were all closed down during our stay. The 6D cinema didn't look like it had been open for months. The hotel was dead during the evening and night time, they had no music playing and we were extremely bored. The hotel made a poor attempt to address the lack of entertainment by putting on just one lousy night of bingo held in the reception area. We were desperate to go home 3 days into our holiday and dreaded the evenings when there was nothing to do other than watch TV or go to sleep.
Other facilities: Only 3 of the 5 water slides opened during our stay, between 1030-1200 and 1400-1600hrs. As the week progressed, only one slide became operational until they didn't even bother opening any slides on our final two days. The wave pool only opened for a lousy 30 minutes each day between 1600-1630hrs. What sort of luxury 'all-inclusive' hotel can't even operate its own slides for a full working day? The lazy river was completely empty and looked like it hasn't worked for years.
The beach was alright, plenty of sun loungers if you wanted them. On our first day, hotel staff actually dismantled the nice pier they have out into the sea stopping you from using that. Staff started to pack away sun loungers two days before we were due to go home, until you felt as if they'd actually pack up the sun lounger you were sitting on if you happened to leave it to go to the bar.
You had to pay to use the games room, again not what you'd expect for an all-inclusive hotel. Even the hotel brochure says you have to pay to play tennis and use the tennis courts.
Trying to even get golf clubs to play mini-golf was like getting blood out of a stone. Our first attempt was met with failure when reception abruptly said to go to the animation desk. The animation desk was packed away, nowhere to be found. We eventually managed to track down one animation guy messing around with other staff in recepetion to ask for golf clubs. He told us to come back in half and hour and offered no other explanation as to why. 30 minutes later when we came back, we were informed by reception that the animation team had closed and they had all now gone home for the day. The animation team really couldn't care less, I only ever saw them messing around with each other- pushing each other around in trolley or packing up equipment and putting everything away.
Holly our Thomas Cook rep was lovely, but you could tell she'd had enough with the hotel and had been bombarded with similar complaints throughout the week. She even commented before we left that the staff didn't really seem to care or apologise when she highlighted the issues throughout the week to them.
Overall, we were very dissapointed with the whole holiday. This hotel made us feel very unwelcome and didn't offer what we had paid for. When you book this hotel, you expect for things to actually be open, working and offering everything they say they do. How hard is it for a hotel to close only after all the guests have left and gone home? Obviously too hard for this place.
Do yourself a favour. Stay away from the Kervanasary Kundu and have a fantastic holiday elsewhere... in a real 5* hotel.
