A Peaceful Haven in a Fabulous Setting

Having visited various places in Turkey over the last few years, we believe that we have found an absolute haven at the Karmylassos Cottages in the Kaya Valley.
There are currently 3 cottages comprising od 2 double bedroom, each with en-suite facilities, an integrated large kitchen & lounge area with a large terrace overlooking the large pool area & beautiful gardens. The other accommodation is a 3 bedroomed house. All are situated with a very private walled garden, which is beautifully maintained. A very peaceful place in which to relax. In addition there is a bar area, which can become a lively meeting place for guests in the evening. Meals are also served here, if required by the guests.
Sue & Vedat, the owners, are very proud of their creation and live on the complex during the season, so are always on hand with helpful advice if needed. Transfers from the airport, car hire and any trips that are required will be arranged on request at advantageous rates. see their web site www.kayavillas.com for more information and pictures.
The valley in which the cottages are set is overlooked by the famous "Ghost Village" chronicled in the book "Birds without Wings" by Louis de Bernieres and made up of 3 small typically Turkish Villages mainly employed in agriculture but with a bit of tourism creeding in. Although the valley is a very quiet place it is well served by several village restaurants catering for most culinary needs but if you feel that it is too quiet in the evenings, the Kaya Valley is set centrally between Fethiye, with its beautiful harbour area, shops and restaurants [ 6 miles], Olu Deniz, with its fabulous beaches and its centre catering for all tourists needs [4 miles] and Hisaranou, a very touristy place with numerous shops, bars, restaurnats & night clubs [3 miles]
I hope that you will enjoy it as much as we have.

Luxury private accomodation in this very special village. We have visited the area for several years and have to say that the Karmylassos cottages are of the highest standard. The owners Vedat and his English wife Sue have 4 wonderful traditional cottages set in a beautiful garden with a large pool. The cottages make a superb base to explore the ghost village and surrounding area, Vedat is always on hand to discuss Turkish life with a glass of Raki. They have a website www.kayavillas.com that will give a flavour should you decide to visit the area.

Nestled in a valley behind Fethiye, perched on the slopes on the Anatolian hills, is the ghost town of Kayakoy. Originally a Greek village called Levissi, it was abandoned after the 1923 population exchange between Turkey and Greece. Time eventually took its course and over eighty years, all that have remained are the frames of dilapidated houses, stripped of doors and rafters, only chimneys and doorsteads enduring in the rubble.
The town has a desolate, ghostly feel and taking a walk through it, especially in the early hours of dawn, is most enchanting. As we trundled through two thousand odd hovels, a helpful hand-made map in hand, we soaked in the silence of the streets and the wall-less houses, each identically marred with an air of flawed beauty.
The settlement boasts a number of historic sites, of which we sadly only had time to see two - the Lower and Upper churches, in various stages of poetic decay. The churches were small and built in a seventeenth century gothic style. They served a Greek Orthodox parish and have been unused for the better part of a century.
The Upper Church, set on the highest hill, is older and has lost most of its murals, though the mosaic courtyard adjacent to it is still in pristine condition. Sunbeams stream through the network of beams and rafters and illuminate the interiors in an eerie yet peaceful light.
The Lower Church, visible from the Upper, is a short climb down to the other end of the village. It is much better preserved and still has the vestiges of an ornate blue and gilded altar. Built in the same style, it made quite an impression, leaving us wondering what the churches must have been like in their heyday.
Kayakoy also has a fountain in the middle of the town and a large Greek mask on a wall somewhere but we hadn't the time to explore the place to our full content. We'd love to go back some day, and for future travellers, I have only this advice: give yourself a full two hours to do justice to the place.

If you want to experience something different, a cool relaxed ambience in a magical setting then Karmylassos is the place to visit or stay. I didn't realise that Karmylassos had a hotel and wooden bungalows so unfortunately didn't stay overnight although wish I had but what time I spent there was something I will not forget. It sits at the base of the old Greek church of Kayakoy, otherwise referred to as the Ghost Town. Can't say that I seen any Ghosts but the spirits were plentiful. It is not your typical holiday village but more like an oasis. Great staff and good service with a real funky edge to it which really made an unforgettable memory for me. I am going back in August cause I just cant get enough and this time I will stay there so that I can be totally absorbed in the atmosphere. If you get a chance definitely check this place out. Hotels, Bars and Restaurants all on site so you've got it all! See ya there!
