We booked three nights at this resort in Da Nang based on its website photos and the numerous positive reviews we read online. However, we were somewhat disappointed with our experience there, possibly because of the high expectations we set prior to our arrival.
First, the things we liked about our experience:
• Spacious guest rooms
• Good restaurant (buffet breakfast, dinner and a la carte entrees) and helpful wait staff...although only ONE of the resorts’ restaurants appeared to be open during our entire stay and it was a bit pricy
• Beautiful, clean semi-private beach
• Tropical vegetation on the grounds was plentiful and very nice
• Relatively inexpensive spa treatments…although you may get what you pay for
• Most of the staff was able to communicate in English ok, although my travel partner is a native Vietnamese speaker which helped us a lot
Areas that we thought could be improved:
• Guest room furnishings seem rather dated. I was told that the hotel itself was over ten years old and it definitely showed its age when we were there.
• A CONSTRUCTION site in the adjacent lot prevents the beach from being relaxing as a result of loud pounding, sawing, etc. The vacant lot on the other side of the hotel appeared to be the site of a future construction project.
• We asked the business center to help arrange a flight for us and was told “no problem”, however we had to continue to follow up with them as they did not call the airline as promised nor did they confirm the flight with us once they contacted the airline, but of course upon checkout we were charged the hotel booking fee for this service.
• Elevator to the guest rooms was only in service the day we arrived
• Spa facility was rather run down, had dimly lit florescent lighting, and the walls appeared to be dirty. One of the attendants looked at me as if I was crazy when I asked where the changing room was so I could put on a robe; come to find out there was not a changing room nor a robe to use. In the treatment room, I expected to hear relaxing spa music but instead experienced loud music from the adjacent hotel gym. The spa staff was not too welcoming despite the fact that my friend and I were the only two guests that appeared to be getting spa treatments at that time. During my massage, I could hear the staff walk up and down the spa hallway that the treatment doors opened to while loudly chatting to one another. Additionally, apparently there were pipes from a bathroom that ran through the treatment room walls I had my massage in and I could hear the toilet flush approximately a dozen times while I was there.
• Difficult to track down beach staff for items such as towels or beverage service, not sure where they were hiding, possibly a result of poor training.
• Quite a few very young children (literally) running around the resort. I recognize the hotel had a kid’s center to help tend to the kids and cannot control their behavior, but it’s just something we would have liked to know prior to making a reservation.
• Swimming pool didn’t appear very sanitary, but with the beach right there, I probably wouldn’t have used it anyway.
Overall, our experience was “ok”. But for over $200 a night room charge during a low-season time period plus food and beverage charges, we had high expectations for Furma Resort. Possibly the amazing resort experiences (and lower prices charged) we’ve had in both Phu Quoc and Nha Trang, Vietnam, upon numerous occasions, set high standards for us.
Cam on.
