March 22nd 2007. David and Ros, Southgate, N London. Two weeks in Aqaba at the Movenpick. Here are some highlights before some tips.
Jordan may be in the Middle East, but it is friends with all its neighbours. Re; terrorism it is safer than London. Re; walking out and about, it is safer than Little-Netherbottom-by-The-Stream, wherever the hell that might be.
Aqaba, Petra, Wadi Rum are must see must do's.
The Movenpick is superb and the staff are the business. Breakfast on the patio, staff remember your name. Very smart, friendly hotel, while the Intercontinental is huge and soulless (like a museum) and the Aqaba Gulf next door is just shabby and has no beach; believe me, you do not want to be a westerner on the stoney, public beach in a bikini in a Muslim country. Movenpick private beach is cute, protected and has all the beds and umbrellas you could need. Rooms are lovely.
Aqaba; ever been pestered in Egypt or pinched in Italy? Not in Aqaba. Muslim it may be, but relaxed it is and tolerant. Off licences on every street corner; just show a little respect. Drunken louts and girls with flashing boob tubes will be offensive to Jordanians who are just so friendly. My wife felt so comfortable she would take a stroll in the evening on her own in the streets to buy something and the shop owners would call out 'Welcome' just to see you walk by. It is all part of the Bedouin attitude to hospitality, which is so strong that for a foreigner to be abused or hurt in their country would bring shame on the nation. Plenty of restaurants and bars. Eating is cheap and good, wind and water sports are top knotch.
Sharm El Sheikh this is not. If you want a purpose-built, touristy, Blackpool-overseas then go to Sharm. Aqaba is a working city with 4000 years of history and a laid back lifestyle - but it is developing at the rate of knots. 3 huge multi hotel / appartment / golf / villa complexes are being built, so this city will become an even bigger city with more to do.
TIPS. - Movenpick; If you do not want to pay for a sea view, ask for a wing room with a view overlooking the breakfast patio.
- Bar meals are huge and great value.
- buy Water from the shops close by, the hotel charges £2 for 1.5 l while the shops sell it at 20p
- Always set your price before setting off in a taxi
- If you go to the aquarium, allow about 45 minutes inside. It ain't huge.
- Go under your own steam to Petra by taxi. It should cost £60 for 2 of you plus £22 each to get into Petra, saving £40+ and the taxi comes and goes when you want to. Get an english speaking driver. Take a coat. Really.
- Wadi Rum. Definitely go and stay overnight if you can. I have seen the stars from the top of the rockies ... these are just as good, but from a bedouin camp, with a fire and locals playing their own music.
- Smile. A Jordanian will ALWAYS smile back.
