My wife and I stayed at the Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort with a group of friends for several nights at the end of a two week trip to Malaysia. First impressions of the spacious and well presented hotel lobby are very positive and we were given a welcome cool drink on arrival. Checking in took quite a while for the group but we were in no hurry.
Our room was a beachfront unit with a view straight out to sea, which was very pleasant. As noted by others, the resort sprawls over a large, hilly area and it is quite a walk along uneven, sloping pathways to get to the lobby, pool and restaurants. It seemed to be impossible to avoid steps or stairs getting from the rooms to anywhere else. This was not a nuisance for us but the elderly, disabled or those with young children would not find it very easy to get anywhere without using the shuttles. We did book a shuttle when checking out to assist with luggage and it took about 15 minutes to arrive so expect to wait if you are reliant on them. In fact one of our party did trip and fall on some uneven steps leaving a fairly nasty graze on her leg.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the rooms are starting to look very tired, almost to the point of being quite shabby. We found the rooms to be comfortable, clean, well serviced and well laid out but major work needs to be done to bring the resort up to a decent standard. Previous experiences with the Sheraton group has led to an expectation of a high level of quality in room presentation as well as staff service and facilities provided; the Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort rooms badly lack this level of room presentation.
Meals at the resort were very expensive by Malaysian standards but we enjoyed the range of cuisines on offer. We had one set menu dinner at the Spice Trader as well as buffet breakfasts at Feasts. We had a late lunch at Feasts on the day we arrived and had a very long wait for food, but that was the only time there was a long delay. Food quality ranged from good to excellent. We did have drinks at the pool bar and found the bar staff excellent. In fact all staff were very helpful, pleasant and hospitable.
I am not a "resort" person and found, in common with other resorts I have stayed in, that they tend to be isolated away from their communities without a strong sense of "place". We were able to see quite a few of Langkawi's attractions and enjoyed the island very much. The Sheraton Langkawi Resort is a pleasant place to stay but badly needs major refurbishment to justify the room rates. The terrific hospitality of all staff we encountered is what sticks in my mind and is the major saving grace of this resort. It is the only reason I can rate it "very good", rather than "average". If I had not been aware of previous TripAdvisor comments regarding the rooms, I would have been very disappointed indeed.
Next time I will seek better quality acommodation that feels more like "Malaysia" and less like "resort".

Whilst it seems that you were overall pleased with your stay, we have taken your comments on board that we could do better in regards to our room maintenance and shuttle service. Rest assured my team takes necessary action to make improvement for our guests’ comfort as well as safety.
I am pleased to learn how much you enjoyed the food at Spice Trader and Feast and can assure the food pricing is competitive with other five star hotels on the island.
