We stayed with them over a period of 3 days out of 5 during our trip to Kota Kinabalu. My room was RM119 per night (twin sharing w/out window). The place was clean, helpful staff and walking distance to most key locations. We made that as our base prior to our climb to Mt. Kinabalu. Free wifi in the rooms and there is a PC that you can use for free in the lounge.
There is no breakfast provided but food is not an issue as walking down Jalan Gaya will lead you to quite a number of eateries (coffeeshops, not cafes). 5 minutes away is Suria Sabah, a new shopping complex with lots of restaurants. Wisma Merdeka, where you can get cheap bargains, is next to Suria Sabah. Tong Hing is a supermarket right next to hotel where you can pick up a bottle of beer. It's so convenient staying there when you want to head to the Sunday Market and it is literally at your doorstep. Walking to Filipino Market will be 20 minutes away and Jesselton Point (jetty to the islands) is 10 minutes away.
Ling Ling, one of HotelEden 54's staff, gave us pointers on where to eat and how to get around the city. Our team had different checkin times which spanned a period of 2 days and she graciously kept a lookout for them. Even told us when she saw us return to the hotel that who and who has arrived.
If you are going to climb Mt Kinabalu, do get her to help you book a cab from the hotel. When we came back Mt. Kinabalu, we were very pleased that she got our rooms ready for us so that we did not have to wait more that required to check back in. You can also leave your bags with them if you are heading elsewhere before coming back to Kota Kinabalu.
When we were bunking at the hotel, there was an incident where a blackout occurred statewide. We were pleased that there were emergency lights in the rooms and the staff came around at 5am in the morning to tell us that they are only to restore power to the lights but not the aircon and heater. At least this puts things into perspective and we were not left wondering in the dark (no pun intended).
Getting there from the airport costs around RM30 (buy your taxi coupon from the airport) and takes about 20 minutes.
If this is your accommodation of choice, you may want to consider bringing:
a) Hangers/hooks - The cupboard comes with 3-4 hangers and the cupboard is really tiny. If you are going island hopping, extra hangers do well for wet clothes in the bathroom
b) Shower gel/shampoo - The hotel does come with shampoo but I feel that the formula is kinda weak. Personal preference for strong shampoo after returning from hiking/swimming.
c) Hair dryer - I think you can borrow it but may be limited in amount.
Advice to hikers to Mt. Kinabalu : BEWARE that there is a flight of stairs to the reception area in this Hotel. You will need to reserve some energy to conquer it after your climb :)
