Where to begin with this place!
Ill cut straight to it: Its affordable, its friendly, its clean, its near accessible, its warmly and thoughtfully decorated.
This is easily one of the best hostels you could find anywhere. The staff, Zaki, Wi Ming are helpful in the extreme, their local knowledge is rich and they never act as if they're doing you an unwanted favor. They're sociable and some of the best conversations Ive had while traveling have been with them. When you need to book something, trip, guide, taxi they'll do so, lead you through with no extra worry or charge and they're honest! They will be frank about whats worth visit and what may not aline with what you want to see in Sarawak and Kuching!
The staff at the Wo Jia are always eager to help.
Also the prices are extremely reasonable, and compared through word of mouth with other travelers the Wo Jia was one of the cheapest but highest quality lodges in Kuching. And with the prices so low they do not cut corners on maintenance or cleaning. Your sheets are clean, your blankets are clean, and yes the toilets are clean.
Also whats great about the Wo Jia is that its not tucked away on some dodgy or dingy side street but its right on the waterfront, the main bazaar so you are always under ten minutes away from restaurants, shops and buses to many of the destinations around Sarawak. And again the staff will always help you finding the right one.
Another thing is the building, Wi Ming chose the place because it simply works. When you go upstairs you're not crammed into hallways where the owner blatantly has tried to stuff in as many rooms as possible. There's a sitting and socializing area facing out on the street and the water which gives the Wo Jia a relaxed and welcoming feel. There's a small plaza in the middle which stops the building from feeling too congested so the place breathes a little and if you're so inclined there is a communal kitchen at the back which anyone can use.
After my one week stay at the Wo Jia I personally regard all the staff as friends, I absolutely loved the place. And the way Wi Ming has cultivated the place is reflected in the name, Wo Jia, Mandarin for My Family because that what it feels like. I only wished there was a Wo Jia in every city.
Now with any review I have to give some token so called neutral or negatives, they're, token, small and only done out of principle.
The some toilets can look a little old, like before the 90s, apparently that bothers some people but they're cleaned everyday. What do you prefer, a filthy toilet installed last year or a clean one?
This one is so petty but there's no hand soap near some the basins, again personally I couldn't give a damn but I guess I have to throw in something, its a review? But I really had to spent time thinking these two up.
This place is wonderful and I will personally vouch for this lodge. I miss the place! Seriously you cannot ask for a better place. And you'll notice is that they put thought and proper care into the place. Even little things Ive seen them make like a jokey welcoming posters for some of the groups coming in.
Also I may have traveled solo but Ive seen them accommodate a family during my stay. And as you'd expect they very patient and understanding knowing that had a different pace, they simply cared. So if you're coming as a family there's nothing to be anxious about.
I even saw groups of teenagers on something akin to a organized exchange program and the staff will guide them, so if teenagers or inexperienced travelers come through here, the Wo Jia will take care of you.
There's nothing bad about this place. This may be an internet review but its true, all positive.
Stay at the Wo Jia!!!
One thing, there's no fitness center. So never mind that rating, I mean, its a lodge!
