We stayed here in January 2012 because of a Malaysian Airlines reschedule which saw us leaving Europe a day early so it was not by choice. Normally a rescedule flight necessitating a stopover in KL would see people in the Pan Pacific near the airport, however this was full because of Chinese New Year and so we had to stay here.
Be aware you are a long way from the airport, some 40km and therefore if you arrive in the morning and have to transfer out to here and for just an overnightstopover it is a long way. About an hour by car.
We arrived and were checked into the hotel (they did not ask if we wanted smoking or non smoking which was a pity because we ended up on smoking and we dont) and so it didn't smell nice upstairs.
The staff were friendly enough and can't seem to do enough for you but if this was a Grand Hotel it was a long time ago.
The decor is in need of a refurbishing, the air conditioning was very weak despite it being so humid and muggy outside and we were given meal vouchers because of a forced stopover but these could only be exchanged for the buffet and not room service and not beverages. The buffet for breakfast and dinner (we slept through lunch so don't know about that) was fairly standardised fare, hot dishes, fruit, rolls, salads etc, the furniture in the dining room could do with a spruce up, my husband sat down on three chairs all of which were rickety before he could locate one which was not broken.
You get one bottle of water in your room and two tea bags and if you want more you have to pay for these which is a little bizarre. And we were in a suite!
The hotel has a little store in the lobby selling a tiny amount of groceries and other sundry items, magazines etc, the man who runs it is very friendly but the prices are a little high, the nearest shops are about 15 mins walk away.
The rooms overlook the Blue Mosque and call to prayer is audible at various times throughout the day which is ok and the mosque really is tranquil and beautiful all lit up at night and in the early morning.
If this is a hotel of international standard then perhaps the tv channels need a little update as the choice is very limiting, perhaps though that might be reflective of what's available in KL, but there were no cable or satellite channels in the hotel.
Of some disquiet was when we had to leave, early the next morning was when we came to leave the desk was unmanned, we had to call out to the back office and finally two nice members of staff came out but the front door was open, not locked and as this was at 5am in the morning. I would have thought that staff would lock the front doors if they were in the office out the back and anyone who wanted to come in to the hotel at that time of the morning would have to ring the bell. A bit of a security issue here because anyone could have just waltzed in the front door.
It basically was a jetlagged blur staying here and so I cant really make a judgement as to whether or not a longer stay would be more convivial. Perhaps if they spruced up the decor, fired up the air conditioning and stocked the empty mini bar in one's room with cold water and ice and added some more toiletries in the bathroom it might be.
But purporting to be 5 star..even in a jetlagged fog I could see that 3.5 stars might be nearer the mark.
Ask for a non smoking floor.
