After reading a few favorable reviews on Tripadvisor, we decided we would stay at this hotel and try it out.
It did not start well. Our friend who picked us at the airport took us to the hotel. However, he could not find the hotel entrance and we ended up in the basement car park! We discovered why later - the hotel had simply no sign at the entrance! How did they expect guests to find them? Later, we asked the hotel guard (who stood at the entrance) why there was no sign and he said something about it was still being made!!!
The reception was not on the ground floor ( it was probably on the second or third floor). As there were two of us booked for the room, we asked for two key cards. We were told we had to share the one key card as they were short of these special key cards. The reason they gave was these cards were "quite expensive to make". Was the hotel so "poor" they could not afford to provide enough digital key cards for guests?
The "bell-boy" who took our bags and who led us to the room dropped the bags but he did not introduce to us how to use the TV or air conditioning control (lack attention to detail, perhaps could be better trained by management?). The TV turned out to be quite complicated and the romote control did not work initially but the maintenance man soon fixed that.
STYLE OVER SUBSTANCE
Unfortunately, it got somewhat worse. Although on the outset, the hotel decor looked somewhat "funky with designer appeal" but when we took a closer look, we found that the standard of the finished work was very poor indeed. Poor plastering, poor paintwork or paint coming off/came off, uneven fittings, etc (Please see the pics attached and see them for yourself). It was not just in our room and bathroom we saw this poor workmanship, but in the hotel corridor as well. This hotel was supposed to be quite new and already, the condition of the accommodation was so poor that things looked in real need of repair. We do not mean to be unkind but really, it looked as if the work had been done by some amateur DIY-er, and not a very good one at that!
As one of your Tripadvisor contributors had mentioned, the lift was quite slow and took a long time to come, but that was not a big deal.
The breakfast room actually looked quite smart (on the outset - we did not dare take a closer look!). There were quite a selection of items to eat. In Malaysia, as people tend to cook very well, it is not usually difficult to find good breakfasts especially at 4-star or above hotels. However, it appeared that the theme of "Style over Substance" at this hotel seemed to cover breakfast as well. Although the food items looked nice and tempting, so many of them were below standards in taste.
The yoghurt was of poor quality, Chinese porridge was not hot (as it should be served), fried noodles tasted bland , the cold roast beef was very chewy, muffins tasted stale/dry and the list went on and on. The saving grace was the mango (?) juice, which we have to admit, was nice.
LOCATION AND TAXIS
The hotel did not have a taxi stand outside. If you want a taxi, you had to book through them (not sure if it was at a premium).
The hotel was close to restaurants, supermarkets and shopping arcades, and that was good. The air condition worked well too and it was cool enough - you would need that in a hot country in Malaysia.
Location wise, this hotel was very, very far from downtown Kuala Lumpur.
We are sorry that we have to disagree with many of your other readers who seem to take a shine to this hotel, but, we are just being frank what we experienced and saw. Our view is that this hotel seemed to be more "Style over Substance" - in their desire to try to "look smart and different", they seemed to have overlooked the importance of attention to details.
Needless to say, nothing will make us want to stay at this hotel again.
