A lot of people have written extreme reviews about this place, i.e. it is either the very best or the very worst, neither, in my opinion are true. I went here with my wife in July 2012 for 10 days. The location is fabulous, a large (in Madivian terms) island with a number of bars, restaurants and other facilities. Spectacular views, stunning blue ocean and beautiful white sandy beaches.
We were in a beach villa, which is spacious and clean, but to be honest, needed a bit of an uplift. The outside bathroom is a little odd, but once you are familiar with it, you find yourself more comfortable with the concept. Using the toilet late at night is not the most pleasant experience, leaving an air conditioned room and going into heat and humidity can be a little unpleasant. The place is dated, cracks on the walls and loose tiles are commonplace. Something that featured regularly for us was the malfunctioning air conditioning, but speaking to other guests, they had no such problems. Ours broke down 5 times while we were there. The air conditioning repair man was a cheery guy, who solved the problem with a smile, so it worked for 24 hours and then he arrived back the next day to do the same.
The service was very good indeed, with the cleaner delivering fresh beach towels to the door and cleaning the room to an immaculate standard every day. The waiters were very helpful and the bar staff were friendly. The self service buffet restaurant was good, but lengthy queues formed to get luke-warm, but good food. The place was open sided and surrounded by trees, which meant that despite the ceiling fans, the temperature could get very warm in there.
The beach bar was brilliant - except that it closed at 6pm - crazy! A lovely quiet venue on a brilliant beach, it was also the favoured place for the local friendly heron. I have heard many "guy walked into a bar" jokes, but right in front of me, a heron walked into a bar! It stood there and looked around for a few minutes to the astonishment of the people in the bar. The jokes were around the fact that it had a ring on its leg and therefore must be all-inclusive! Truly amazing.
The surfers bar was the cool place to go, a really smart place with shade and a view of the spectacular surf, full of cool dude Australians on surf boards really enjoying the big waves.
The Disco bar was a good place at night, with cool breezes blowing through the place, it was a pleasant venue. Sadly, the resident singers were not the best - their accents made most songs very funny at first, then just annoying later.
The main bar was hot and sticky unless you were out on the pool terrace, however the weekly karaoke night was very good fun!
After 7 days, we had had enough, then came the boost to remember the holiday - an upgrade to a 5 star resort on another island! Honestly, the difference between the 2 places made me realise that this resort is honestly looking a bit tired and could do with a refurbish.
I can honestly say that we enjoyed our 8 days on Hudhuran Fushi, but it is not as good as we were expecting.
