“Save yourself some time and don't look at anything other than this perfect hotel.”
Well, I'm in the unusual position of writing the review whilst our holiday is still in full swing. It is truly an amazing place and I want to echo all the wonderful things other reviewers have said. The staff here are second to none and can't be more helpful and are led by a very pleasant general manager Marc, who makes a point of finding out about your stay. I could go on for pages and pages of compliments but I will instead give some more practical bits of info which I'm sure you'll find useful.
The hotel stands pretty much alone, along with a few others along the coast but there are ways of getting out an about. Taxis are expensive and a ride to Port Louis late evening to the casino will set you back about £40. Grand Baie, where the nightlife is probably half that. The great thing is though is that the driver waits for you, so you don't have to worry about safety. We hired a 125cc scooter for the day (through the hotel) and this costs Rs 800 (about £17). This allowed us to explore outside for a few hours and go for lunch and generally see a bit more of the beautiful island and meet the Mauritian people in different circumstances. We were also able topic up a couple of bits from a supermarket like snacks and beers and wine for the room early evening. Failing that, you can hire mountain bikes for free and cycle to a little supermarket just past Le Meridien hotel. Beers in the shop cost about £1 and wine about £10 which is much less that the hotel so that for your early evening drinks you don't necessarily have to tuck into the mini bar.
Prices in the hotel reflect the quality and depth of service and I don't begrudge that at all, its just that when in the room, using supermarket goods for a drink or two doesn't seem unreasonable. Expect to pay (with the 15% government tax that is added to everything) about £5 for a beer and about £25 upwards for a bottle of wine in the bars and restaurants but I don't think that is bad considering where you are and the shear number of staff. I haven't checked this but I reckon, including ground staff etc, than the hotel has in excess of one staff member per guest.
The eating options are two restaurants. We went half board which seems to have been a good choice and you get a starter, main, dessert and coffee included in that. There is a small supplement for some items such as lobster but I think you'd expect that. The more casual dining option, 'The Rocks' gets very busy so make sure you book at least a few days in advance if you want to eat there. The menu in the main restaurant changes twice a week and you won't be short of options. There is a separate vegetarian menu too if that's your way!
There are different grades of room. We saved up for a room with a garden which is completely walled and private. It has 2 sun beds in the garden and a covered seating area for 4 which was great for early evening drinks. There are pool villas too which I am sure are amazing.
The hotel has a number of DVDs for your use should you wish but you might want to bring your own as there is a dvd player in the room, as well as an iPod dock.
There are a loads of free water sports, including water skiing, snorking, pedalos, glass bottom boats, the only ones you have to pay for being paragliding, diving ... the more expensive ones to provide. But this was still much better than expected.
The service in the restaurant is great. The bottles of beer I didn't feel were cole enough for my liking so I politely requested some were extra chilled for the following night and they were, especially. I didn't need to ask ... it is the level of minute detail that you will find so overwhelming.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any specific questions on anything. One thing I know for sure is that, as my wife so beautifully put to me one evening - 'if anyone gives this wonderful hotel anything less that 5 stars on any review, then their sense of perspective and their expectations in life need to be seriously questioned.'
Stay here! I know already that we will leave this gorgeous hotel with some fantastic memories that we will hold and cherish for ever!
