“Great time photographing a beautiful city”

I signed up for a photography holiday - one week long - staying in Maison du Sud and being tutored by Darren Lewey

I have had a good camera for years, but while I understood how to use it, my pictures were unremittingly dull. Darren has managed to combine the fun and relaxation of a holiday with a complete course in all the elements of the photography. We have toured the Moroccan countryside, visited souks, stood atop waterfalls, and walked the ramparts of fortified towns. Often we were the only Europeans in sight. From the technical to the artistic, we have covered everything, and have done so at my pace (thanks Darren). I left the holiday feeling that, at last, I could compose an image which would not embarrass my camera. While the accommodation was superb, the food great, and the town lovely the real highlight was that this course did what it said on the tin – I left a much better photographer than I was when I arrived.

The photography course is on http://www.imagesinthesun.com/

“Good all round value hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2011

very nice, characterful hotel, some bedrooms a little dark but spacious, we asked to be moved and with no hestitation we were offered a lovley bedroom, lounge and bathroom on the roof terrace. Extremly helpful and friendly reception staff who made our trip , it was a good location altough essouria is only small, it felt very safe and was spacious comunal areas. My only comment would be there was no bathroom soaps etc - shampoo or shower gel, and I would have prefered another option at breakfast other than the very carb pancakes and bread.

Room Tip: ask for a room that isnt too dark.

“Lovely Moroccon atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2011

Excellent location and very comfortable accommodation. The furnishings are stylish, staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast was plentiful. We loved the cool and tranquil interior but also made use of the sunny roof terrace. A great place.

Room Tip: Have change ready for the luggage porter.

“Bed & Breakfast with very Moroccan style”

The Riad Maison du Sud was amazing! Beautifully restored/maintained in the main areas, while the room was a little more rustic, but clean and tidy. Unless you're a very light sleeper, or have one of the rooms on the roof (25 & 26 I think) then you'll never hear the AM call to prayer and we had a room that overlooked the side street so no problems there either. :-D ).
The staff were helpful and friendly and I must mention the housekeeping ninja's. We knew they'd been and prepared our room, but we never saw them until the last day. Very conscientious and considerate staff.
The food at the restaurant was very good value for money, even if you choose to stay elsewhere I'd recommend a visit to their restaurant as the value for money's pretty good.
The wi-fi signal reached up to our room, but we needed to ask at reception for the access key, otherwise it’s sit in the lovely surroundings downstairs. Also there was no TV in the room, which I found a bit of a strain at first, having become an Al Jazeera addict in Marrakesh.
The riad is brilliantly placed in the slightly more up-market area of the medina, however at night there seemed to be a gang of lads offering hash to any foreigner walking past, but a polite "no thanks" was enough for them to not hassle you.

If you're looking for 5 star luxury then this isn't the place, but if you want a beautifully-maintained and styled B&B equivalent then you should really consider checking in here.

“a little gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2011

Maison du Sud is a litlle gem in the heart of the Moroccan fishing port of Essaouira. The hotel is made up of two merchant's houses in the heart of the medina or old town, each built around a courtyard and converted to modern comforts. The rooms are in fact little suites, each with a small sittingroom or salon with a couple of sofas, two armchairs and a low table, a bedroom and a bathroom/shower wetroom, and the decor is wholly moroccan. Service is as helpful as you could wish - I punctured a tyre driving up from Agadir: the manager told me where to get it fixed and gave me a map of the town as a guide, advised on restaurants, and called my airline to confirm my departure.. Continental breakfasts of freshly squeezed orange juice, petit pains, moroccan pancakes, bread, butter, honey, jam and yoghurts, with coffee or mint tea make a good start to one's day. The hotel fronts onto a busy pedstrianised shopping street, so the sights of Essaouira, coupled with a magnificent beach, are all but a few minutes walk away. My wife and loved our stay.

Room Tip: I want to go back
