I stayed here for 4 nights on a recent trip to Guangzhou, after checking out of the Ritz Carlton because of it's abysmal and desolate location. This hotel is a fine choice for better location, and it's very convenient if you're travelling to or from Guangzhou by train as the East train station is literally right across the street. There is also a gorgeous and enormous park immediately opposite the hotel, which provides a nice break if you're like me and find yourself quickly overwhelmed by the traffic and general sense of hustle and bustle in Guangzhou.

I stayed on the Executive Club floor, only because the rooms are a bit nicer and the cost isn't that much more than the standard floors. The "benefits" of the club level are silly - free happy hour of warm beer in a lounge where you're certain to be the only patron, and a complimentary breakfast buffet which is mediocre at best. The room however was perfectly acceptable and nicely appointed, but had a bit of a cheap "Holiday Inn" feel to it. Still it was a decent bargain and the room was spacious and clean (and internet is free).

The other amenities at the hotel are average; service is good, but the main restaurant isn't worth even the free breakfast, and the nightclub/bar in the hotel is permanently empty. I might stay here again, but probably not since I prefer a hotel where I can get a great meal if I like (not that I usually eat in hotels, but the option is nice), and a bar where I can relax with a cocktail and not feel odd because I'm the only patron in the place.

I have been stayed on the Executive Floor (21-23) in the hotel for three nights a week from January to end-April 2009.

Over that period, I noticed the service standard within the hotel slip. For example, the list of services for Executive Floor guests is inconsistent. I did not receive a ‘complimentary welcome fruit plate on day of arrival’ for
the last month I stayed there. I did not receive a ‘complimentary daily
newspaper, Chinese or English’ for even longer. Perhaps, they have changed this policy. If so, fine, but you may wish to inform guests of such. If you tell guests they will receive a benefit and they don’t, it’s a disappointment.

Housekeeping staff don’t appreciate a guest’s right to peace and quiet.
Housekeeping regularly vacuums and talk to each other outside rooms well-before eight a.m. Not all guests leave the hotel at seven thirty to conduct business.

The area in need of the most improvement is the 'buffet-driven' Grand Café; staff here are woefully under-skilled in the area of customer service, particularly the receptionists that seat customers. On the several occasions I visited the restaurant, I was seated at the ‘closest available table,’ generally in high traffic areas. Receptionists in this restaurant seat guests according to their preference and not guests. No guest in a hotel or a restaurant wants to have other guests walking by their table with plates of food every thirty seconds. This is particularly bad customer service and it demonstrates a distinct ignorance for the ‘guest experience.’ Accordingly, I would rather eat breakfast outside the hotel.

Front desk employees are courteous and friendly, but the system requires
improvement. I left my office and returned to the hotel early on Friday
afternoon with a view to checking out. However, on every single occasion I returned to my room I found that my key did not work. Almost every single week, I was locked out and had to go to the Executive Gallery and have the key renewed. That is an inconvenience.

As I write, I would say the Jianguo / TianLun (how long do they intend saying ‘previous known as?’) is not a five-star hotel. It may have been before I arrived and it may be again in the future, but it requires some serious fine tuning.

It’s all about customer service. It’s not about the price. It only becomes about the price when the customer service is poor. As Mr. Gucci used to say, "The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten."

Right now, I'm remembering a downward trend in overall service and the price.

Stayed on the Executive floor for four nights while attending the International Trade Fair. The room was large, clean and very comfortable. The breakfast was quite extensive and featured primarily Western and Japanese cuisine. English was not spoken by most of the staff, but just about everyone tried very hard.

The hotel is one block from the subway and two blocks from the Eastern train station, where the trains from Hong Kong arrive. Not much else going on in the neighborhood for the average visitor however.

The gym includes an elliptical trainer, a treadmill, a stair master and a bike. There are also a few free weights and one weight machine. The pool is small but looks nice for a quick dip.

  • Liked — Modern, clean and comfortable
  • Disliked — Non Cantonese or Mandarin speakers will have a hard time communicating with staff

I'm staying at the TianLun International Hotel in Guangzhou, China while I'm in the country for business meetings. Overall, I'd say that this is a pretty decent hotel to be staying at. The room and its appointments are aesthetically appealing (if you're into the minimalist/zen interiors), the lobby and the restaurant (Grand Cafe) are likewise appealing.

For the price we're paying (I get to enjoy a company discount), I'd say that this place is good. There are some things that I didn't enjoy while staying here, such as the difficulty I had in handling my airport-hotel transfer, the lack of english television programming, and the lack of choices for room service. That being said, I'd like to say that my stay here was pleasantly comfortable. The hotel has a nice view of a park. It's accessible from both a bus and train terminal. AND it's a few blocks away from IKEA!!!

The staple McDonald's, KFC, and Starbucks outlets are 5 minutes away from the hotel, plus it's pretty safe to walk in the streets, so if you're not that adventurous as far as dining choices go, then at least you won't starve while you're here. If not, you can always just go and have a buffet in one of the hotel's three restaurants.

  • Liked — Proximity to company's office
  • Disliked — Lack of english television programming

For adoptive parents traveling to Guangzhou, this beautiful, modern, five-star hotel is located a few minutes walk from the relocated U.S. Consulate, with room rates comparable to the White Swan. The hotel staff, from the housekeepers and waiters to the manager, could not have been nicer, more welcoming and accommodating - and nearly everyone spoke English. The included breakfast buffet was unbelievable, from made to order omelets, waffles, oatmeal and other Western favorites to Asian faire, the variety was huge and the quality was excellent. The hotel was spotless and well maintained, and we had free high speed Internet connectivity in our room - a real plus when instant messaging or emailing photos back home. Located in a safe, diverse neighborhood, with attractions, restaurants, shopping, Shamian Island and the White Swan's waterfall and red sofa, all within easy access by taxi, modern city bus or subway train, or by foot. A huge park with topiary, waterfalls and fountains, directly across the street is a great escape from the oppressive heat and humidity - and a McDonalds is just beyond the park. Or visit the shady neighborhood just behind the hotel, with traditional Chinese architecture, fish ponds and shops along pedestrian streets, that provides a great opportunity to mix with locals. Whether in Guangzhou on business or to conclude an adoption journey in China, this hotel is definately a great place to stay. Be sure to check out my photos.
