Returning after a twenty year hiatus to this once the first five-star hotel in Xian, we found this old dame still in good shape but with a few wrinkles. Arriving at the airport, we were greeted by a red-jacketed Golden Tulip porter who guided us to a taxi, past the rogue drivers, which we found to be a nice touch of the hotel.

Check-in was handled efficiently by friendly, English speaking staff, and in no time were we in our room in the recently refurbished north wing. The bell boy barely put the luggage on the floor in our room, when he started into a rapid fire pitch for a firm that provides chauffeured cars for independent travelers wanting to explore Xian and its environs. On parting, the bell boy also let us know that he thought our tip was not large enough. He had barely left, when the phone rang and this company called to repeat the pitch, undoubtedly including a commission for the bellboy in their price.

The exceptionally large room came with a king size bed with very comfortable mattress, nice linens and pillows, bay window seating group with couch table, desk, mini-bar, and flat screen TV. Despite facing the street, the hum of the A/C system masked the faintly audible traffic sounds. A nice touch was a basket with the fruit of the day in the room that was replenished daily, as were two bottles of water. The bathroom came with a tub/shower, nice soft towels, and a large assortment of toiletries. It is here where the hotel shows its age, the marble counter top was stained in places and had several cracks

Two restaurants off the good size, busy lobby offer something for every taste. The Shang Palace serves an extensive selection of Cantonese food, and the Coffee Garden offers a scrumptious buffet as well as a-la-carte dining at a reasonable price along with a nice wine selection. Breakfast is served on an equally lavish buffet. Room service, possibly due to language was spotty in filling orders completely. Entertainment by a Filipino trio offered pleasing nightly entertainment in the lobby lounge. A gift shop, travel bureau, fitness center with indoor swimming pool, and the business center round out the facility.

Although the picturesque old Hutong neighborhood has given way to wide streets and overpasses near the hotel and the Golden Flower hotel has lost some of its luster, it is still a great place to stay while in Xian.

“A good standard”

Stayed here like most visitors to Xian, as part of a China Tour and a visit to the Terracotta Warriors.
There is a reasonable sized car park/entrance area to the front and the reception desk is well sited although staffed by speakers of limited English.
The dining room is just off the reception and of a good size with a good selection of table sizes. The meals are of a good quality and served buffet style, the waiting staff are attentive and helpful.
The rooms are clean and contain all the things expected, like tea/coffee making, drinking water, fridge, mini bar, bathroom freebies, shoe cleaning etc.
There are a fair selection of shops large and small not too far away, but be careful crossing the very busy road.
I would have no hesitation recommending this hotel as part of a tour.

We stayed one night at the Shangri-la Golden Flower while visiting the Terracotta Warriors. The hotel was reasonably clean and comfortable, though definitely no more than a three-star level by international standards.

However, we were very disappointed by the service we received at the Xi'an airport. When we arrived, we went up to the Golden Flower counter at the airport to see whether they had a hotel shuttle. There was no shuttle, but a man in a Shangri-la uniform wheeled our luggage over to the taxi stand. He arranged a taxi for us and told us it would be 170 rmb for the trip. While we were riding in the taxi, he called us again and asked us if we wanted to contract the same taxi driver for the following day's trip to see the Warriors. We declined. Later, we found out from the hotel front desk that the metered taxi ride should be no more than 100 rmb or so at most. Obviously the man at the airport counter was colluding with the taxi driver to pressure hotel guests into using his services at exorbitant rates. Very disappointing.

The Golden Flower is an older hotel that has been refurbished and situated in a poor location for sightseeing and not near many shops or restaurants. Bedrooms were clean and comfortable bathroom smaller that other Shangri -La hotels. Usual bath robe , slippers, room safe, iron and ironing board. Breakfast in the Coffee Garden is from 6.30am - 10 pm and has limited choice compared to other Shangri -La hotels. Not so much fresh fruit but you can still have your eggs cooked fresh any way you want them. We were staying only one night so that we could visit the Terra-cotta Museum and there’s not much else to see in Xian. Shangri- La hotels are a great chain of 5* hotels this is not there best but just an acceptable standard for a one night stay.

Spent one night here as part of a Viking River Cruise Tour. After reading the reviews I was worried about this one, but we were happily surprised. We got an end room with a huge sitting area, a full kitchen (which we never used), a big bathroom with a tub/shower. My only wish would have been for a king-sized bed instead of two queens, and I'm sure they would have moved us to another room had we asked. But for one night it wasn't worth it. The bed was comfy, tho, with soft sheets. The service was great. The only meal we had there was breakfast, and it was tasty. I have nothing remotely bad to say about the Shangri-La and would not hesitate to stay there again.
