Returning after a twenty year hiatus to this once the first five-star hotel in Xian, we found this old dame still in good shape but with a few wrinkles. Arriving at the airport, we were greeted by a red-jacketed Golden Tulip porter who guided us to a taxi, past the rogue drivers, which we found to be a nice touch of the hotel.
Check-in was handled efficiently by friendly, English speaking staff, and in no time were we in our room in the recently refurbished north wing. The bell boy barely put the luggage on the floor in our room, when he started into a rapid fire pitch for a firm that provides chauffeured cars for independent travelers wanting to explore Xian and its environs. On parting, the bell boy also let us know that he thought our tip was not large enough. He had barely left, when the phone rang and this company called to repeat the pitch, undoubtedly including a commission for the bellboy in their price.
The exceptionally large room came with a king size bed with very comfortable mattress, nice linens and pillows, bay window seating group with couch table, desk, mini-bar, and flat screen TV. Despite facing the street, the hum of the A/C system masked the faintly audible traffic sounds. A nice touch was a basket with the fruit of the day in the room that was replenished daily, as were two bottles of water. The bathroom came with a tub/shower, nice soft towels, and a large assortment of toiletries. It is here where the hotel shows its age, the marble counter top was stained in places and had several cracks
Two restaurants off the good size, busy lobby offer something for every taste. The Shang Palace serves an extensive selection of Cantonese food, and the Coffee Garden offers a scrumptious buffet as well as a-la-carte dining at a reasonable price along with a nice wine selection. Breakfast is served on an equally lavish buffet. Room service, possibly due to language was spotty in filling orders completely. Entertainment by a Filipino trio offered pleasing nightly entertainment in the lobby lounge. A gift shop, travel bureau, fitness center with indoor swimming pool, and the business center round out the facility.
Although the picturesque old Hutong neighborhood has given way to wide streets and overpasses near the hotel and the Golden Flower hotel has lost some of its luster, it is still a great place to stay while in Xian.
