We stayed at Hearton Hotel Kyoto for the first time. I must first qualify my comments by saying that hotels in Kyoto are, in general, overpriced, and the hotel owners are, in general, not that eager for business. Given that, it was hard to find a hotel that is conveniently located, reasonably priced, and nicely appointed. We felt that the location was fairly good, being almost at the geometric center of the city. The hotel was very close to the Karasuma Oike subway station, which is the intersection of the East-West Line and the Karasuma Line. Subway trip from the JR Kyoto Station was very short. The hotel is medium walking distance or just one subway stop Nijo Castle and Imperial Palace. The subway can take you to a lot of other sights as well. The Shijo shopping area is either one subway ride or a ten minute walk. I don't understand why a previous reviewer thought the hotel is far from the center of the city. Anyways, there are a lot of dining options nearby...there is no need to eat at the traditional restaurant in the hotel. We did not eat there, but we thought the prices were a little high. If you want to spend that much for dinner, there are literally dozens of other well known options nearby. The room was small and rather uninspired. It was clean, but smelled a bit musty and smoky, especially in the hallways. We thought the rates were reasonable only in Kyoto...otherwise a bit overpriced if this property were to be in other cities in Japan. However we thought this was a good option for getting around the city using the subway. If you want to stay in a Kyoto hotel with nicer rooms, be prepared to pay more.
