While the location at first appears a bit random, it's an incredibly well-designed, lovely space. I've dined here once before and found the food to be very interesting, fresh and delicious. I had a friend in town and organized a dinner for 6. While there are many places to choose from, I decided on PLOY for the right combination of atmosphere, food and wine. It was a bit embarrassing when a few guests showed up a few minutes early (before I had arrived) and the restaurant claimed to have 'no reservation' for the group, despite the fact that I had made one a week in advance. Being a Wednesday night, the place wasn't even half-full (probably didn't even need a reservation??) so we were seated at a suitable table. That said, I continued to be 'grilled' by a member of the waitstaff on the reservation -- while the other guests were seated, he brought me the list of names for the evening and asked me to identify my name. I wasn't able to find it, so he asked me for my contact number so that they may try and search for it (again, the restaurant was at most 40% full). He later apologized because they found that the reservation had been recorded for another day; however, it shouldn't have been such a big issue given there was plenty of room?
We sat at the table for at least 30 minutes before someone came around to ask if we were ready to order and since we were talking and enjoying the company, we weren't particularly bothered. Often times in Malaysia, it's customary to indicate to the waitstaff when you're ready to order, but we couldn't find anyone within our vicinity during that entire time. When a server finally came out and asked if we were ready to order and we responded 'yes', he was flagged by another table and simply left us again for another 10 minutes.
Having organized the dinner, I ordered appetizers for the group and when the waiter repeated the order (which I appreciate), he had missed at least half of the items. I helped review his pad of paper and went back and filled in the holes. After bringing the appetizers, no one ever returned to our table to check on the food or take our main course order. When he finally came back (perhaps an hour later?) he asked if we wanted dessert because he said the kitchen was taking final orders.
By the end of the evening, I was so embarrassed for having suggested the restaurant, I insisted that I pay for the entire group. While I do think the menu is very interesting and the wine list is quite good, I think it's such a shame that the service is so disappointing that I won't be able to recommend it to friends.
