My partner and I booked to go to Traders in early June and got a good price of S$130 per night for a double room not including breakfast. We booked because of the tripadvisor reviews and a general sense of wanting to be in a major hotel. We were there for 2 nights over a weekend.
Things we liked about the hotel were the location, within walking distance of the Petronas towers and nearby malls, and being in a large and modern hotel which should meet basic expectations. The other major attraction was the Sky Bar which we had read so much about and were keen to see.
The room was ok, good size, a bit bland but fine.
The bathroom design was odd, it meant that if you wanted to have a shower, you slid a glass door across the shower entrance. This would be fine but the water leaked all over the bathroom floor, it just didn't work properly.
We also never got a towel change, our tissues and face towels weren't replaced and generally it there was slapdash and inattentive service from the cleaning team. I left feedback but didn't hear from the hotel.
On to the Sky Bar. Trying to get into this place was more difficult than anything we have ever experienced! It was almost ridiculous. We arrived on Friday and tried to book seats in the bar, to be told that we couldn't book seats for that evening as it was too near to the time of booking. Fine.. so we were asked to come and wait for seats. So we did, to be told they we had to wait ( we could see open tables but assumed they were booked and people were running late for their reservations). We were told we could have drinks at the bar standing up, which we decided to accept.
When we got into the SkyBar we found that there were quite a few spaces at tables which actually weren't booked (!?) and so don't really understand why the waiting staff "a.k.a. guards" at the front of the bar wouldn't let us in to sit at one of these free tables.
It's a nice enough experience in the bar once you are there, good cocktail selection. As noted by previous reviewers Traders decide to play techno extremely loudly later in the evening, which makes a romantic evening, or even conversation, impossible. If you want any kind of atmosphere or conversation go early evening when they play music but at normal levels.
We ordered some bar snacks ( pitta and dips ) which were overpriced and a bit gross. I have never seen such a small and tasteless amount of dip given or so few pitta chips!!
The view is what you are there for though and it is beautiful and well worth a visit ( maybe worth viewing from a different location though such as Luna Bar ).
Bemused at not being allowed in on Friday, we tried to book on Saturday ( thinking of the view and prepared to give it a second chance) only to be told we couldn't!!!!! We decided to wing it and arrived early evening around 7pm to a completely empty bar. I don't understand the policy of Traders, don't they want people to pay for drinks in their bar or not??
One other point of note, we tried to eat in one of the restaurants at 10:30pm, knowing ( as stated in all company literature and on our keycard holder ) that it shut at 11pm. We were turned away and asked to go for room service. Again, don't Traders want people to use their facilities??? I can understand if the restaurant was fine dine and would take hours for a meal but it was buffet style and again very empty with lots of food on display.
In case you think we weren't dressed correctly, we specifically dressed smart-casual and made an effort so it wasn't that we were inappropriately attired.
The best part of all this is that once we tried to get room service we were told we couldn't get it until 11pm which meant a 30 minute wait before we could even order.
So overall, the place is ok, but the attitude and the service are really bad at times ( we felt unwanted and unloved ). The best service was from the guys as you walk into the hotel, who are helpful, chirpy and polite.
Of everywhere I have travelled, Traders KL provided the least welcoming impact and made us feel that we positively shouldn't ask for anything. There are LOTS of staff around too but they are not inclined to make any kind of effort to make your stay memorable or in any way get return business. What happened to going the extra mile?
We will go back to KL as we live so close, but to Traders? I don't think so.
