Stumptown coffee....if you know coffee, you know this is the best and Mix serves it! Great gelato too!
Terrific baked goods, the best in town. they have little European style sandwiches on a baguettte which made for a great lunch on the ride home.
If you like homemade sweets with all the butter and all the goodness like your grandma made, if you like rich gelato, or if you like a very nice cup of coffee made from the best Italian espresso machine money can buy, you MUST visit Mix. There is no comparison for a sweet shop and coffee shop of this highest quality.
You want to go here. The coffee is very good to excellent (depending on what you order), they serve gelato, and the cupcakes... are... AMAZING.
With their sweets, you can tell that someone really sweated the recipe details, and it's much appreciated.
The waitstaff is also reasonably speedy, friendly, and even quite cute... one freckled curly-haired gal in particular. =]
The only bummers are the limited seating (often taken already by the wi-fi squatters), and they do seem to sell out of some stuff early (with good reason).
If you have a sweet tooth and want the good stuff, check it out.
The place is called Mix and is down on the plaza, upstairs frmo Munchies and sitting underneath the Black Sheep. They bake all their own pastries and breads every single day and most have a French sort of twist on them. There are savory things such as "pain au jambon" (a ham and gruyere croissant sort of thing with fresh thyme) as well as the best homemade danish you'll likely find outside of Denmark or Austria.
Our favorite thing, though, is the coffee. It's roasted by Stumptown up in Portland and is truly the best you'll find in Ashland. No contest. True, there are local companies roasting and serving brews here in the Rogue Valley, but none comes close to the utter magnificence of Stumptown at Mix. The baristas there are all well trained and do a better-than-average job of working the espresso machine, too, which is rarely the case in tourist/college towns.
For those who like true brews, ask for the french press. They have a great Honduras and an even better Guatamalan that works great as french press, but even their Hairbender blend is hard to beat either as espresso or in the press.
Mix serves gelato as well, and they bring in some great ones from a specialty gelato place in New York. Shortly they'll be making their own before too long, though, and I'm looking forward to this.
