We weren't sure what to expect with this hotel as it seemed like all of the nice hotels in Rio were super expensive and the reasonably priced hotels were below average. This hotel looked to fall somewhere in the middle so we took a chance. We found this to be a great option in Ipanema Beach.
Location is excellent - it's on the first block back from the beach, literally a 2 minute walk, it's located on a street with lots of cafe and restaurant options, and is in walking distance to Copacabana Beach. Tour operators will also pick you up from the hotel for day tours.
The hotel itself was nice - nothing luxurious but definitely comfortable, clean and modern. The rooms were a decent size with good amenities, a hot high pressure shower (always a plus!) and a very comfortable bed. The only odd thing is that the rooms have tiled floors as opposed to carpet but that didn't effect our stay. Buffet breakfast was included - the food and variety of hot and cold options was good, but day to day the selection didn't change. Breakfast service in the restaurant was also good.
The main area for improvement with this hotel is its Front Desk Customer Service. Throughout our stay, the staff never seemed to smile, exert friendliness or seem overly approachable. Upon check-in, the lady couldn't find out booking. Communication during this process was poor - we sat and waited for a short time (which was fine) but when the lady returned all she said abruptly was "we found it". There was no further explanation or apology for the wait or confusion. Not the best welcome or first impression. Upon check-out the same lady just presented us wih our bill (no smile) and didn't ask about our stay or thank us for staying with them. Ok - so it's not a deal breaker, but to me it is Basic-101 customer service which makes a big difference to a guest's overall experience.
I will add though, the other staff were very helpful when it came to discussing and booking tour options around Rio. I would recommend the tours that the hotel offers via a local tour company - they're easy to book at the front desk, can generally be done last minute (we booked ours a day or two in advance), generally depart twice a day (morning and afternoon) and were on time, friendly and good value.
Overall - this is a great hotel option in Ipanema - considering everything is expensive, this is a good value, comfortable hotel in a great location. If deciding between Ipanema and Copacabana in general, I would recommend Ipanema.
