We went to Mistral first time, last year for Easter holidays. We had such a great time there that we ended up coming to Balchik 6 times in 2007, just for the stay at the Mistral. We tried to make reservations for our vacation in 2008, but it was on short notice and we could not find anything free until September. The hotel has great sea view from the rooms with king size bed, and the area is extremely quiet, unlike other parts of Balchik. I for one was very pleased that the sea view consisted of a small bay used for port in the area, and if you got up early enough, you could see the seamen leaving for their daily fishing activities, and could observe their daily rituals before heading off to the sea. All of that was also authentic, as they ignore the fact that new hotels showed up where their port used to be, and they perform all of their activities there.
As for the service in the hotel, everyone is extremely pleasant, all of them speak English, and the manager, Victor is always there among his employees making sure everything goes smoothly. Drinks at the lobby bar are unbelievably cheap, I for one drank plenty of beer and Bailey's on very low prices, unlike any other European country. The maids used to clean up the room and exchange the towels, daily, and they did so with the toiletry products as well. Definitely a 4 star hotel!
Still, I would add that we were particularly pleased by the food offered by the hotel's restaurant, El Marinero, with lounge by the sea. This year we thought we could go and stroll a little by the bay in Balchik as we were heading to Nessebar. We found a new restaurant in the place of El Marinero, it is called Francisc Drake. Everything is changed, starting form the quality of the food, which is way incomparable with El Marinero, to the menu which is very poor in English, not to say that as Romanians, it was very hard to figure out what the dishes contained..
We used to go to Balchik for Mistral.. now we feel things are quite changed because of the food they offer and I'm not sure we'll go back.
