My girlfriend and I stayed here this past weekend for just one night.
We were in Birmingham to catch a concert at The Workplay Theater, a nice venue that is less than 5 blocks away from the hotel.

We weren't at the hotel for very long, but it was a pleasant stay. Parking is easily accessible with an attached garage once you arrive.
Its a public garage though, so space might be limited if there's any local event going on. Parking is $5/night, but if you are a Hilton Rewards member (free to sign up), parking is free. We had in/out privilages, but I am not sure if that's due to the Rewards membership or not.

Check-in was fine. Our process went smoothly, but I did notice two couples come down to the desk, saying the rooms they were given already had people in them. The issue was taken care of quickly though. The front desk employees were welcoming and nice, and as typical with a Doubletree, the free (not-so-warm) cookies were welcomed after a long drive as well.

The room was nice and spacious. Seems like the hotel was recently renovated after being bought from Radisson. Carpets were clean, walls
were immaculate, and the flat screen TV (not a flat panel) looked relatively new.

The classic bathroom (sink is inside the actual room) was spacious and clean (save for a hair or two in the tub), and the massaging showerhead was nice. Neutrogena products were a welcomed change from the typical "this soap smells like flowers and pepper" offerings. However the vanity is dimly lit, and there wasn't a fan in our bathroom either (a vent was present, but no switch for a fan). Free coffee in the room was nice (my girlfriend particularly liked how travel cups w/ covers were provided), as was the ample closet space. However, the iron in our room leaked and didn't work properly. I notified the desk upon check-out. I didn't need to iron that badly, so I skipped taking the offered replacement.

The bed was the highlight, as it was an extremely comfortable sleep. Lots of pillows and a pillow-top, semi-firm mattress was perfect for both me and my girlfriend.

Check-out was as easy as pie, simply needing a call down to the desk.
We left at 7:30am, yet our bill/receipt was awaiting us under the door when we woke up.

Niether of us used the pool, but we had a view of it from our room. The sitting area seemed nice and relaxing, but the pool seemed a bit on the small side. Might be a hastle during the warmer months.

The location is convenient, as the hotel, in essence, sits on the campus of UA-B. The downtown area is still a good drive away, but it seems manageable. There is also a Starbucks directly across the street, and some nice eateries less than a mile away.

In all, the hotel was a positive, enjoyable experience. However, nothing was out of the ordinary here. That's a positive thing, but on the same token, it leaves the hotel to be forgetable to habitual travelers.

“Perfect for Us!”

We were in town to see a concert at one of the local clubs at 5 Points. The hotel was close enough that we were able to walk to the club. Parking was only $5 for the day with unlimited in and out privileges so driving would not have been a hassle either. Our room was very comfortable, clean and quiet. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed a great breakfast buffet at the hotel restaurant the next morning with a variety of items to choose from. I will definitely choose this hotel again the next time we are in Birmingham!

“Horrible Management at Doubletree/Radisson Hotel”

Doubletree Hotel Birmingham

10 Jun 2006
9/10 found this review helpful

I am a heavy business traveller staying in hotels 3-4 days per week. However on this trip I am here with my mother who is undergoing cancer treatment at the UAB Medical Center. I have NEVER written a hotel review to complain however I feel I must today. I have no complaints about the hands on employees (in fact, I feel sorry for them.) but my complaint is with the management team. This is not a customer focused hotel and I'm sure this starts at the top. One example: I had a simple request today(could the shuttle sitting idly for hours please take my mother and me to a nearby museum 3-5 mins away? Cabs are very difficult to get in Birmingham. I was immediately told by the manager that the shuttle ONLY goes to airport (miles away) or to the hospital. She was not only uncooperative but she treated me extremely rudely. We waited 30-40 mins for a cab and the shuttle sat for entire time and the driver was sweeping the lobby area.

The managers and front desk people treat customer requests is if there is something wrong with the customer. I mentioned this experience at lunch with several Birmingham people and was told that many others have had same complaints, including the leader of a famous ballet troupe from NYC.

“Crying for a Major Renovation”

Doubletree Hotel Birmingham

Booked a stay with the Radisson during a visit to the Birmingham area. I was disappointed to see that a hotel that is in a metropolitan city still completely outdated. I am speaking about the rooms and its ammenities. I am not a fickle individual but expect the best attempts in keeping the rooms decent and comfortable. Just to name a few of the issues (this is the description of my room, cannot speak about the rest), the carpet is worn, the center of the mattresses sunk in, and the padding of the chairs no longer existed, remote control dirty, curtains stained, although a non-smoking room its had its heyday of cigarette smoke, etc. Lacked quality and comfort. I should add though, the staff, when discussing my disappointment were more than helpful and courteous. Additionally, the management offered a new room (I declined) and offered a full refund. No hassles or debit issues. A wonderful staff and very understanding.

“Not up to par for a Radisson”

Doubletree Hotel Birmingham

We spent three nights at this hotel while our son was in Children's Hospital. It was very close to the hospital and the parking garage made for easy access to the hotel and your room. This is obviously an older property that Radisson has done a decent job of maintaining. However, I thought the hotel was beginning to show the need for refurbishment. The chairs in the restaurant were looking very used. All the baseboard and door frames were decently painted but there was significant wear and wood damage under the paint. Our room smelled mildewy which I suspect was caused by leaking windows which had dampened the carpet at some time. You could tell the windows had leaked because of all the extra caulk that had been applied in multiple layers in an attempt to stop the leak(s). Other than the mildew the room was acceptable. If you're sensitive to cigarette smoke then this place will turn you off immediately. The hotel lobby also doubles as the hotel bar. I'm not talking about another room that's right off the lobby but honestly is right there in the lobby within 15 feet of the front desk. I couldn't believe it when we walked in to register. After no more than 3 minutes at the front desk we all reeked of smoke for the evening. Price-wise it was reasonable and it was convenient to Children's Hospital. The unstable and cool weather the days we were there eliminated walking the 4 or so blocks to the hospital and you would not want to walk on a hot Alabama summer day. Children's Hospital does not charge parents for parking and the parking for hospital visitors is reasonable as well so parking is not an issue. If I ever have to go again I might consider the Embassy Suite less than a mile away but at twice the price maybe not. Overall I don't have a real beef with the hotel I just thought it was not quite up to par for a Radisson property.
