My family, my girlfriend and I stayed at this Thai family owned and run "resort" over New Year's Eve 2009. As usual during this time of year in the Thai islands these days, most of the popular places recommended by TripAdvisor were booked up literally months in advance. The MoonWalk Lanta Resort was recommended by Yuko at Escape Cabins (her "partner" resort) and was the only option I could find available... and boy do I regret not booking somewhere else much earlier.
We arrived after a wonderful stay with Yuko (who became full, hence the move), and I had paid extra, an exorbitant 5700 THB per night for the "Ocean Front Family Bungalow" with 2 bedrooms (sleeps 4), because I was simply out of options on one of the busiest tourist days of the year. The initial feeling at 6pm when we arrived was, "hmm...maybe it will be OK". We sat out at the restaurant and enjoyed some excellent calamari and a few beers. The restaurant has great food. Don't let the rest of this hotel review steer you away from the fabulous food here at MoonWalk.
After a beautiful sunset on Klong Khong Beach, the reality set in. A relaxing Thai beach sunset turned into a music blaring disco at both the hotel's bar and the bar next door. This went on from about 8pm until 2 or 3am (and not just on NYE)! The "beachfront family bungalow" we stayed in should be renamed the "Disco Bungalow" as its paper-thin walls let the blaring music pipe right into your bedroom with no resistance. Eventually I had to walk up to the bartender around 2am and say "turn it off". They turned it down a bit, but the bar next door is loud enough to keep you awake and there is no way to keep them from doing otherwise. In summary, the problem here is this, my family and I came to Koh Lanta because we thought it was a laid-back island where we could get away from it all. What we got was a resort run by a family that had an entirely different idea of what their guests wanted.
On top of the blaring music I must say that the service was downright horrendous at times. Simple requests go unattended to, orders confused and forgotten, the bill was incorrect on the side of overcharging for motorbike rental/food at the poolside, I had to remind them to make up the room, on and on and on!
I think it is great to see a large Thai family running a resort instead of foreigners, however I am afraid this family just doesn't get what foreign people like me find so attractive about Thailand and its people in the first place. Sad to say it, but this hotel needs to improve or fail. I hope for the former and will check back to see additional reviews in the future.
