I had wanted to go to Fraser's Hill for a long time and it did not disappoint. It is very simply and very quiet. However, the misty green scenery is very moving and atmospheric. The walks were a bit muddy but enjoyable. So long as you are not an action (or sophistication junkie) and are after a peaceful weekend, this is the place to go.

Apparently unlike the Cameron Highlands, Fraser's Hill is relatively undeveloped. You will not find much here in the way of sophisticated hotels or restaurants. I understand some very exclusive bungalows are available. But, as far as I could tell, they were self-catering and a tad more than I wanted to pay. This really only leaves one decent choice - the Smokehouse.

The building and gardens are lovely. We ordered one of the suites with an open fire. This was hugely enjoyable and we zealously burned our way through as much firewood as the friendly staff provided. The food is pretty average - think of the stodgy fare of an English boarding schools and you will have some idea. However, the dining room and bar area are nice.

My main complaint - food aside - is that the building is poorly maintained. It costs as much as a swanky hotel in KL, but really needs a thorough renovation. It is well run and managed, but more shabby than it really should be. Perhaps this is the price you pay for going somewhere quaint and quiet like Fraser's Hill. But the hotel is let down by this fault.

Overall, it is better than virtually every alternative in Fraser's Hill. However, some improvement would not go astray!

Just about 2 hours from the hussle and bussle of the KL town you'll find Frasers Hill. a little hill that sits spread out over 7 hills on the Tahan mountain range.

Decided to take my parents for a weekend break to celebrate my dad's birthday and it was a good trip. booking the rooms and securing them was easy. just a call and they would do the necessary to help you complete your bookings (payments are needed to secure your room reservations) before heading up.

The Smokehouse is a Tudor style building that houses about 16 rooms, which comprises of standard rooms, suites and family suites. do try to get Halcyon Lodge 3 and the Laura Suite. the feel of it is a typical English style living. just lovely! the rooms may appear old as they are. toilets are refurbished and has new tiles and are very clean. the standard rooms comes with showers wherelse the suites have bathtubs. some rooms may have that 'musky' odour to it as the furnitures are old and also carpetting. could also be that when no guess stays, they close the windows and gets little air.

you can opt to have dinner at the restaurant in the main building where they serve English dinners. for some, the meals here might not be that economical BUT its good. a full course dinner here can set you back MYR80 (approx USD25). for tea time, do try out their scones. they are about the best that i've tried so far. do get a space outside for tea, just cooling and a lovely environment. doing so you'll also be visited by some 'feathered' locals.

the staffs of the hotel are friendly and are always at their best to assist you in anyways. no qualms here. was just up there 3 weeks prior and the service is still the same, if not better. other things would be all rooms comes with English breakfast. parking may be a bit of a problem during the weekends as they are always fully booked. do remember going up the 'Gap' are odd hours so do time yourself if not you'll get caught an hour plus waiting in turn to go up to Frasers. other than this, i'd say its a real great R&R place to be for a short getaway and lots of fresh air!

We had a very pleasant stay in the Smokehouse. It was an easy drive up from KL and good to see some of the countryside on the way. The hotel makes a change from your standard international business hotel. The best way I can think to describe it is "Colonial meets a Malaysian interpretation of an English theme pub".

Our room was a good size, with massive bathroom overlooking the jungle. It all seemed clean and the staff took care to remove their shoes before entering the room. It came complete with open fire, which you could request to be lit in the evenings. This useful to drive out some of the tropical dampness that you get so far up in the hills.

Service at the hotel OK, but a little slow at the bar and restaurant (Which does pseudo-English, not Malay food). The terrace is a nice spot to sit out, have a cream tea and watch the birds fly by to scoop up the crumbs. Overall it feels a little past its best, looking a bit tired in places, with paint peeling. It feels like it hasn't really been looked after for the last couple of years.

One thing to note is that it's little way up the hill from the main part of the town, but no problem if you've got a car. In town there's a few places to eat: Chinese, Malay etc. plus some hawker stands, so you don't have to eat at the hotel.
