I had wanted to go to Fraser's Hill for a long time and it did not disappoint. It is very simply and very quiet. However, the misty green scenery is very moving and atmospheric. The walks were a bit muddy but enjoyable. So long as you are not an action (or sophistication junkie) and are after a peaceful weekend, this is the place to go.
Apparently unlike the Cameron Highlands, Fraser's Hill is relatively undeveloped. You will not find much here in the way of sophisticated hotels or restaurants. I understand some very exclusive bungalows are available. But, as far as I could tell, they were self-catering and a tad more than I wanted to pay. This really only leaves one decent choice - the Smokehouse.
The building and gardens are lovely. We ordered one of the suites with an open fire. This was hugely enjoyable and we zealously burned our way through as much firewood as the friendly staff provided. The food is pretty average - think of the stodgy fare of an English boarding schools and you will have some idea. However, the dining room and bar area are nice.
My main complaint - food aside - is that the building is poorly maintained. It costs as much as a swanky hotel in KL, but really needs a thorough renovation. It is well run and managed, but more shabby than it really should be. Perhaps this is the price you pay for going somewhere quaint and quiet like Fraser's Hill. But the hotel is let down by this fault.
Overall, it is better than virtually every alternative in Fraser's Hill. However, some improvement would not go astray!
