The Ye Old Smokehouse hotel in/on Fraser Hill was a pleasant surprise for us. We've been away from Europe over 6 months now and the hotel just gave us the feeling of being back. The hotel/hill was covered in clouds / mist for 3 days, but that made the whole atmosphere very cosy and mistirious.
The staff was very friendly and helpfull; we got a free upgrade to a suite as the standard room were under renovation (in the middle of high season?).

The suites are very spacious and nicely decorated. There is no aircon or central heating, which you don't need anyway. Due to the clouds/mist it makes everything a bit damp, but that is just part of staying at a hill station.

The food was good and the wine excellent (not expected in Malaysia). Nice to eat a proper piece of meat and yorkshire pudding, instead of the standard Mee or Noodles.

The area is very nice a lot of things to do, including some very nice hikes.

Point of improvement: the restaurant staff struggles with explaining what is on the menu and are not very pro-active (you need to ask for a refill if your glass is empty). My eggs at breakfast was cold on one of the mornings.
A bit of paint / renovation would do the hotel good.

I stayed at The Smokehouse with a friend for two nights from 5th November 2009. Having read all the other posts I agree with most of the comments. It’s a lovely spot marred simply by a lack of maintenance, although the staff work hard to keep the place clean and your stay comfortable. My room was damp and musty which was probably to be expected as we arrived in a dense mist in the afternoon. The bathroom was fine with endless hot water, although the towels were on the way to being threadbare. The hotel could be so much smarter with a coat of paint here and there. I guess the owners pocket most of the expensive RM308 per night charge that we paid rather than investing some of it in the fabric of this lovely building. Breakfast was fine, although the baked beans were stone cold. Complimentary afternoon tea with scones, jam and cream was a very pleasant interlude on both days of our stay. Dinner was pleasant enough but not the finest cuisine for the money. Service was relaxed but the staff were very friendly. Being an Englishman I give good marks for the attempt at creating the atmosphere of an English country hotel. I have stayed at several in the UK that could learn a lesson or two from The Smokehouse ! Overall I can recommend a stay of a couple of nights but have to add that you pay a premium price for the experience. Other places to stay in Frasers Hill include modern style hotels which you can experience anywhere, but the ‘heritage’ experience is worth sampling if you have not done so elsewhere.

Having stayed at the Old Smokehouse in Cameron Highland, which was average to poor, our expectations we modest, but the Old Smokehouse in Frasers Hill is definitely the best of the two.
Placed at a nice location overlooking the moutain area. The rooms are spaceous, old, but the basics are working fine and they are full of character.
The food is oke and the staff is friendly and supportive, although not all of them speak english.

Sad that I have to re- write this review after giving them a thumbs up review in Dec 2008.
My recent trip back to the hotel was far too unpleasant. The rooms (2 adjoining rooms) had damp carpets on arrival , ants were crawling everywhere especially the toilets. The curtain in the room was not closing very well when our rooms were facing the main road. Mosquitos especially around the dining area.
Not so pleasant anymore.

Just returned from a trip to Frasers Hill. On the whole, the holiday was superb. The only 'letdown' was our visit for an English Tea at ' The Smokehouse'. Being known for its "English" theme, I was overwhelmed to experience English teatime. The menu was what should be and would likely be ordered by most customers.

Devonshire Tea + 2 scones at RM18.

Definately we ordered this. The day was quite crowded due to the peak holiday season. The waiting rather long but we were all too happy and looking forward to enjoy our garden tea.

What!!! came the teapot and there was 4 teabags of
BOH TEA. with its tags tagging alongside the teapot.
Is this daylight swindler???
change the menu... tea + 2 scones
or just cut off the tag. Imagine the disappointment we had especially when my son wanted to rekindle the days in UK with his wife.

If it was just Boh Tea we could have it at any other place.

So don't be fooled by all 'English' the next time you stop at Smokehouse.
