I can only guess this hotel saw better days 15 - 20 years ago. The halls smelled of mildew, the room are in desperate need of refurbishing, the sheets were dirty, and the buffet breakfast seemed to contain what could only be described as leftovers from the night before (sweet and sour chicken, some type of meat with pepper for breakfast ?!?).

Staff, however, was accommodating and the condition of the hotel is not their fault.

Would not stay here again. It spoiled what is otherwise a lovely spot.

Stayed there for 2 days. Booked a room with golf course view for RM207 per night with 2 single beds. I had a good first impression of Shahzan Inn compared to other hotels in Fraser Hill. However, the door lock was jammed and we had to call the maintenance to open the door for us. Even though the maintenance person was very attentive (he changed the door lock for us in less than 20 minutes, instead of using some sort of metal key card, he changed it with the keys that we usually use at home), the hotel management should ensure that this thing doesn't happen now and again. Anyway, the staffs are very courteous and friendly.

We got free breakfast for two persons in their coffee house. The choices of food for buffet breakfast was very limited. My brother had to take another meal of breakfast outside since he had a large appetite. There are only a number of stalls selling food and only a small mini mart. So, those who plan to visit Fraser Hill should bring more food with you. Of course you can dine in the hotel's coffee house but I find the price is ridiculous.

Anyway, those who are not nature-lover, please do not stay more than 2 days because there are not much to be explored. From the information I found in the web, visitors can do certain activities like boating at Allan's water, bird watching and they even have strawberries over there. However, I found that we cannot go boating because they are currently renovating the place. To watch birds, you have to go by foot and hike the hills using a trail. And the strawberry park was closed! Oh yes, and also the botanical garden if I'm not mistaken, it was closed tight! Since I didn't enjoy jungle trekking, I spent 5 hours to explore every road in Fraser Hill. You can see many old bungalows, some are very well kept while others are left unkempt. The place is really cold especially at night and early in the morning. So make sure you bring your sweaters to keep you warm.

Stayed here for two nights in July 2008. Overall, the reception and hotel staff were helpful and friendly. They had a number of trainee staff who were eager to please. Rooms were clean, and the amenities adequate. The included daily buffet breakfast was ample. We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The rate we paid was rm110 nett per room per night. Fraser's Hill is a great place for birdwatching, and since there is little else to do, don't forget to bring along your binoculars.

I have stayed now and 2 years ago in this hotel when it was newly reopened and they asked at that time 110.-
The top floor and the lobby were than newly renovated. The lift smelled already moldy. this is still the case. Lift with carpet all around will always smell in this climate.
The hotel is the former Merlin Hotel and now owned by the Pahang Royalty and a real shame to their name.
As usual in Malaysia, maintenance has to be cheap and so is the entire hotel in the class of the income level of the staff.

I was in Frasers this weekend and was welcomed by cheap illegal Malay roadside stalls on the parking lot giving the entry of Frasers a cheap flee market image. The tourist office is closed on Saturday. The Mosque is far too loud, but the Malay population living mostly in the ugly police quarters doesn’t hear it. For that the mostly non-Muslim visitors are pestered with it.

Frasers is missing decent clean accommodation in the RM20 to RM50 range like in Cameroon. It is also missing nice accommodation in the range of RM50 - RM100. The offerings from the Tourist Office are mostly owned by government and operated by unqualified Malays – hence rotten, poor and moldy.
There are also plenty expensive beds available which are mostly said to be moldy and not worth the price.
Nice Restaurants you cant find. Nowhere can you sit nicely, serene, lean back and relax like you would do in Scotland or Switzerland. Most of the restaurants are government owned and rented to Malays. I found only one Chinese place on the square. All places around the clock tower are cheap places which charge a lot for poor local food. Because none of the operators own them, there is no ownership pride. The same places in KL would be empty and abandoned.
The restaurant at the golf club has closed. Smokehouse Inn is overcharged. Scones and Tea for two RM64 is robbery.
We went to a private bungalow and had there meals and later also tea. Friendly service for next to nothing.

Still I prefer Fraser to Cameroon because it has natural rainforest and is untouched from any industry.
It is definitely a holiday area which is only spoiled by too many big corporate places and empty or poor maintained bungalows. I hope to have soon my accommodation problem solved, by finding a nice small bungalow. I don't like those many empty apartments either. They are sterile and don't contribute to a hill station atmosphere.

Frasers is nice and cool and much closer to KL. It is cleaner than Cameroon and definitely more relaxing and serene. It seems to be predominantly visited by Malays, who do not have an outdoor culture. Instead of enjoying a walk in the cool air, they rather drive through all Frasers and watch it from the car.
Closing the roads for residents only and operating a battery shuttle bus service like in Zermatt would be the thing to make it more attractive for everybody.

In August 2007 we enjoyed a pleasant overnight stay on Fraser’s Hill. The drive from Kuala Lumpur would probably take about 2 – 2 ½ hours, but we took our time and made several stops. One stop was for lunch in Rawang at Lotus Restaurant. If you happen through town at mealtime we would recommend it. It is delicious Indian food you can get served on a banana leaf. After you pass the main downtown business district and start up a small incline, it is in a plaza behind the Petronas station on the right.

The old system of odd hours up/even hours down on the one-lane road up to Fraser’s Hill is now obsolete. A new road is open that is always up, and the old road is always down. The new road is one switchback after another that took just over an hour and had me quite nauseous by the time we got to the top. If you are prone to motion sickness you might want to take your medication before.

We stayed at Shahzan Inn. This was a last-minute trip on a holiday, so we paid the holiday rate of RM250++, which was more than it was actually worth. Some rates I spotted on the Internet of RM150-170 are more reasonable.

The Inn would not be to our standards for a long stay, but was good enough for overnight. We were greeted by a nice lobby, and the desk clerk showed us the room before we committed. There was a room deposit required at check-in (I think RM50) the balance of which was returned at check-out.

The room was of average cleanliness, and very basic. It had twin beds, tv, and small balcony with view of the first fairway of the golf course. The pillows were way too thick to use, so I used my sweater as a pillow. The bathroom had a tub with hand-held shower (mounted so low on the wall that even with the hose stretched out my 6’ tall husband had to bend a little to wash his hair.) Interestingly, our friend staying in the room right next door had a walk-in shower with regular wall-mounted shower head. Two towels, soap and shower cap were provided, but no shampoos, no washcloths, no bath mat, no hair dryer, and no safe or clock in the room. The shower was nice and hot, though, which was welcome after a cool hike in the forest.

The walls must be paper thin, as we heard every noise made in the room next door. Sleeping with the windows open in the cool mountain air was nice, but we were shocked from our sleep at 6 a.m. by the wake-up call from the mosque.

The restaurant had indoor and outdoor seating, and the special BBQ dinner that night (in celebration of Merdeka) was delicious. Breakfast was mediocre.

The best part about Shahzan Inn is its location – right in the heart of the village. The golf course, shops and eateries are right outside the door. Just don't expect luxury.

For hiking on the hill, we tried Bishop’s Trail, which is not for the squeamish. Wear sturdy shoes and watch for leeches. I wore bug repellent, but we hardly saw any flying insects.
