Based on online reviews we chose to stay at the Tuna Bay resort for 5 nights. We made a reservation in advance, including the transport from Kota Bharu airport to the jetty and the jetty itself. Everything was perfectly arranged; we were picked up at the airport when we arrived, and the special Tuna Bay jetty left right on time. We were really glad that we had arranged all this in advance, it really made our day a lot more relaxed!
We booked a Deluxe Standard Chalet, the cheapest rooms available (+/- 250RM per night including breakfast). Even these rooms are expensive compared to other resorts on the island, but you get a clean room with a lot of space and a clean bathroom. Based on all the reviews online Tuna Bay is probably the best you can get at the Perhentian Islands. From our room we had to walk about 50 meter to get to the beach, and the restaurant was really close to our room too. All in all we really liked our room, but the only negative point was that my girlfriend woke up every morning with a lot of small red bites on her skin. To us this really looked like bites from bed bugs. Although the resort probably cannot do a lot to prevent bed bugs, it affected her vacation. Another point was the price for wifi. They charge 10RM for 30 minutes. Not that I desperately needed internet during our trip, but when other resorts all offer free wifi this is not very customer friendly in my opinion. Especially when you pay 250RM per night already.
Then the activities. Tuna Bay is a great place to stay if you want to explore the island. We did a snorkeling trip (ask the small store next to the resort!), hired a canoe and took a water taxi in front of the resort a couple of times. Especially the snorkeling trip was an unforgettable experience! The coral reef in front of the resort is also a great place to snorkel. You can see all sorts of fishes here like for example the small clownfish.
We had a great vacation at Perhentian Island, but this was more because of the island itself, the great weather and the beautiful underwater world. Tuna Bay was okay for us and probably the best resort on the island, but the two points about wifi and bed bugs (although I understand this could happen to any hotel or resort) could be improved.
