“Amazing trips to the Sahara”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2010

We (my husband and I) had booked a 3 nights-tour from Marrakech passing the Atlas Mountains to Erg Chebbi. Our guide was Mohamed from Soul Adventure 4x4 and we can highly recommend him since he was born himself in the Sahara and knew a great deal about the area (including good hotels to stay and places to eat at). Also, we payed a rather fair price.
The dunes themselves are amazing although there are several tourists, which can disturb the quiet now and then, but still, most of the time it's simply plain marvellous.
We rode to our camp in the desert on camel back for about 1,5 h. It was only the two of us and an American couple (plus the two camp tenders), which meant we could enjoy the night in desert without feeling like being in a big tourist sharade. We slept in Berber tents, which were really comfortable and returned to the hotel (where we had breakfast) after watching the sunrise in the Sahara.
I can totally recommend the whole trip since it was nothing like anything I've ever experienced.

“Morocco desert sightseeing”

We started our trip from Marrakech,a family of 4 people. We left about 07.30 on the way to the atlas mountains leaving the Marrakech civilization behind. We had a stop to show us the itinerary in the map which we agreed on before. My trip was 5 days tours. Our Rough Tours guide/driver was boussou was great person and knowlegable about most of things. The atlas mountains was such a wonderful place to visit, yet any one who afraid of hight surely won't like it.My kids like the landscapes and the road so much.We stopped for coffee toilet services. We arrive to Aitbenhaddou, which is a nice Kasbah from a far and it is better to take some pictures from a distance than when you are in the middle of it.Here we had our lunch with an average price.
We continue to Ourzazate, where we had s hort visit to Taourirt kasbah, then along the way to Kalaa de mgouna and finally in Boumalene dades where we spent our first night.
The hotel,le vieux chateau, was great though I read some bad reviews about, yet Boussou known and arranged everything to us.
The second day we left to Hi Remlia, which about 250kms from Dades, it is long drive, yet we enjoyed so much.We visited Toudra Gorges, which is a highlight. To Hi Remlia is where real and authentic Morocco is located.Passing through Alnif, then tafraoute and then arrived to a sandy river which trees of Tamaresk. We arrived to our driver/guide village which is very small village in nowhere. It seems to be like some part of Australia or Arizona, real desert, real Morocco. We spend our night in a small hotel which is very quiet and silence is the dominant. It is called Aghbalou Ramlia.
The third day ,we left to Erg Chebbi,Merzouga,we were offroad since we left alnif,no tourists along the way and the landscapes are amazing. From here,I know why the company is called Rough Tours. Most of the time, out of touristic place, till Erg Chebbi, where we can not avoid them.We found our camels awaiting for us to spend the night in a Berber camp in the middle of the sand dunes.Great place for the travellers to Morocco. The moon is shining like the sun during the day.It was my first time to see it like that.Food was served hot and Berber music and tea later to end the night before going to bed.
Early morning to see the sun rise,It was great. We rode our camels back to our hotels where we had our breaky and warm showers. The camel men were heplful and they played with our kids doing the sand boarding.
The fourth day was on the way to Ourzazate,we passed through Rissani, then taking the road to Daraa Valley, here ,it is the tarmac and for miles and miles accacia trees. We had our lunch in Nkobi, and then continue to spend the night in a small Berber hotel Darchamaa with a pool, great chance for the kids to swim.Mixed Moroccan and European food was served. Our last day was on the way back to Marrakech taking the same way we come from. The trip was great and we enjoyed it so much,Rough Tours company is something I can recommend to people visitng Morocco.Boussou was such a good driver/guide and fotographer.

“A Beautiful place to visit the desert”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2010

Stayed in a nomad tent on new year's eve at the Sandfish camp after riding dromedaires to the dunes to see the sunset and party around the campfire. Had an excellent time on a tour run by Desert Majesty with an excellent guide, Said.

“Great experience!”

We had a week of holidays for the kids, and were intially considering visiting Switzerland, but ultimately decided on Morocoo. We spent 4 days in Marakkech, (stayed in Riad Jnane Mogodor for 2 days and Hotel Atlas Asni for 2 days). Apart from Marrakech, our kids very much wanted a Sahara trip, and so we decided to go to Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) for 3 days.

Based on reviews from other members of Tripadvisor, I contacted Moha (of Kasbah Mohayut in Merzouga), to arrange a Sahara trip for us. He arranged for Mr ALI to pick us up in a comfortable Toyota LandCruiser from Marrakech . We started at 7:30 AM from Marrakech, and reached Merzouga in the evening at around 6 PM. On the way we stopped to admire the Todra Gorge as well as Dades Valley. That night at Kasbah Mohayut, we had a couple of comfortable rooms. The next morning we visited a local Berber village as well as local lake (yes, believe it or not, there is a lake in this area, frequented by Flamingoes I am told, although we didn't see any). Then at 3:30 in the afternoon, we got on our camels and made a trek into the sand dunes for about 2 hours. Camped under a moonless but starlit sky that night, woke up to see a Sahara sunrise, and then got on our camels to get back to Kasbah Mohayut. by 9 AM. Showered, and then left back to Marrakech by 9:30 AM. Stopped at Draa Valley and Ait Ben Haddou on the way back, and reached Marrakech by 8 PM.

Hats off to Mr. Moha and Mr ALI for all their courtesy. They made it a truly memorable trip for us. I highly recommend them.

“The Dunes of Erg Chebbi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2008

Many travelers will agree that their night in sleeping the dunes of Erg Chebbi was the highlight of their time in Morocco.

4 hours south of Marrakech, the flat and dry desert terrain suddenly gives rise to the tallest dunes in Morocco: the dunes of Erg Chebbi. This apricot sand is unlike any you have ever encountered on any beach, or in any desert. This is the sand of the Sahara. Around Merzouga town and at the foot of the dunes one can find many small auberges where it's possible to arrange camel treks for a night in the dunes. While many people arrange a camel trek through a tour company beforehand, it is possible to do it on the day of, from your auberge.

Trade in your 4x4 for a camel and head for a long and meandering walk into the dunes. After about 1.5 hours you will arrive at a Berber camp where you will stay the night. Mattresses and wool blankets are provided. You may sleep outside in the open air if it warm enough and if there is no risk for a sandstorm. Upon arrival mint tea is served to by the camelmen, and a traditional tagine dinner is prepared while you're given the time to climb to the top of the highest dune to watch the sun give way to the moon. After dinner the camel will drum you deep into the night. Note that camelmen are often not paid for the work they do, rather the owners of the auberge will instead allow them to sell fossils to the tourists. Be sure to either tip your camelman (50 dirhams / 5 euros is sufficient) or purchase a fossil or two from him. Support the locals. After your night under a blanket of stars, wake early to watch as the sun fills the sky over the Sahara, and changes the dunes into a sea of warm hues. You will ride back to the auberge in the morning light, having breakfast upon arrival. Reflect on your night in the desert -- it is not something you will soon forget!
