“Beautiful Hotel”

The Kandy House

17 Jul 2007

This is a truly beautiful boutique hotel. It is a remodelled colonial mansion, with grounds beautifully well kept, the attention to detail is present in everything, the rooms have personality, the swimming pool is fantastic, and it's is a relaxing oasis. Rooms have no air conditioning, just a ceiling fan, but the weather in Kandy is cool enough for you not to need it. We truly thought this to be one of the nicest hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka.

This is why it's so hard to have to give some criticism as well. Throughout our stay, we felt we were continuously pushed to consume food and drinks from the hotel which, although quite good, were not exceptional, and definitely the most expensive we had in all the hotels we stayed at in this country - up to twice as expensive. The hotel's location means you need to drive 15 to 20mn in order to find an alternative decent place to eat at, so they kind of take advantage of it.

Also, the location means you are far from Kandy's town center, but still believe it is worth it.

What a jewel. This boutique hotel was easily our favourite place to stay. Beautifully designed in every way, the hotel is a feast for the eyes. The food was exquisite too, it was so nice to be served rather than the buffets so common elsewhere. The nine rooms means that you quickly speak to fellow travellers and make friends. We returned after a long trip and there were sweetly scented jasmine flowers laid out on our bed. Such attention to detail. Simply put, this place is paradise.

“A welcome oasis”

The Kandy House

My partner and I were looking for somewhere to relax for a few days during a business trip to Sri Lanka. After hailing a taxi in Colombo and enduring along (and hot!) ride to Kandy, we arrived at Kandy House, without a reservation. Luckily, they had one room available (the Royal Peacock) and it was just as we'd hoped.

The Kandy House is absolutely beautiful. Service and food are first rate. If you can, try to be there for their Sri Lankan night -- 10 different meat and vegetarian curries, cooked perfectly. We also enjoyed swimming in the infinity pool and sipping cocktails at sunset. The staff even included the guests in their twice-weekly cricket game, played on the front lawn of the hotel.

If you're looking for somewhere to escape the traffic in Kandy (yet only a 15 minute Tuk Tuk ride away from the action), don't miss this place! It's a welcome oasis. Be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment.

“Succour for the senses”

The Kandy House

The Kandy House is one of those small hotels that will forever stand out in the memories of its guests -- restful rooms, stylish decor, elegant architecture, welcoming public spaces, exquisite food, professional and attentive service, and a garden and pool in which you can sun yourself, listen to and watch the varied bird life, or just doze away the afternoon after a busy morning in town : all in all, succour for the senses. We loved every moment of it. Mendes and his capable staff are always there when you need them -- if it can be done, it will be! And Ashleigh and Yves, the informal but gracious hosts, manage the Kandy House as if it were a home away from home -- but with all the little touches that make it very special. We shall definitely return.

“My favourite hotel!!”

The Kandy House

I cannot disagree more strongly with any bad reviews of Kandy House. I'm a travel agent and go away to a different destination every month and have been to some stunning hotels of all types and standards around the world and can quite safely say that Kandy House is definitely one of the best.
I think that any of the negative reviews must have been written by uptight people who need to relax and learn to enjoy their holidays!
Ashleigh and Yves were lovely to talk to and the service was fantastic - we really felt we were being waited on hand and foot.
The hotel has a lovely colonial feel to it although it is traditionally Sri Lankan and the furniture and decoration is just lovely.
If you like nothing more than to lie on a recliner on your own veranda reading then you'll love it.
The infinity pool is like a hidden bit of paradise and you can even go for a swim with the frogs at midnight!
Plus contrary to what's been written for £100 for all of our food and drinks for two nights we thought it was great value!
