I visited the Deer park in February 2008, as part of our honeymoon having spent a week in the Maldives and wishing to return to Sri Lanka for the last time to explore nature, wildlife, and be cut off from the rest of the world.
After a 5 hours journey to the hotel arriving in the hotel, we checked into an Angsana Cottage (the top rooms in the hotel) to discover, mouse droppings in the bathroom, frayed pillow cases. The hotel is supposed to be in a remote part of Sri Lanka, but there is a road where buses, tractors and locals staring in go past all the time.
We had some drinks in the bar, nice but small then went to the restaurant and ordered from the A la carte menu, as we did not fancy the usual buffet. Despite ordering from a la carte, the waiter brought us the starter from the buffet menu, as an automatic gesture, which we declined and waited for our main course from the a la carte menu. Big mistake, we ordered fishwhich had been frozen for months, had awful texture. This was accompanied by vegetables in soup (tasted from a can). We ended up hungry on the evening of our arrival. The tour company mentioned on their web site no longer operates there and the arrangements to visit wildlife, parks etc, are in fact done by the hotel staff. Fine, but not what we expected. These factors spoiled our holiday there and we checked out the day after giving comments to the managent of the hotel. This hotel felt as though no investment had been carried out for quite some time, leaving the quality of accommodation, food and services poor or just average. We have been to Sri Lanka 4 times but would certainly never return to the Deer park.
