If you want a holiday, don't stay here.
..and make sure you insist on a receipt (with the nights you're paying for written on it)!!
In short, the staff here are so underpaid that they really dislike their jobs and take it out on the guests. Not a pleasant environment to holiday in.
Firstly an explanation of the title.
One of the guests here was a little odd and had tried to enter the women's bathroom. One of the staff caught him doing this and reported it to the manager. The manager (Mr Ikram Hussain) and staff proceeded to pull the man into the lobby and said they would call the police. They then, before calling the police, repeatedly hit the man on the head until he was cowering in the corner. They then asked him to leave the hotel grounds immediately - before the police arrived.
The staff's reasoning "Well, he wasn't a foreigner, and it was the wrong thing to do".
They seemed to have no problem punching another human being repeatedly, when he was showing no signs of aggression or trying to flee.
The managers cannot be disagreed with, or held to logic. There is a night manager and a day manager. I asked the night manager if I could store extra baggage in an unused locker while I checked out to stay with a friend for a night. It was on the condition that if the other lockers all filled up and mine was needed, I would understandably pay for it in full. He agreed. When I arrived back after my stay at a friend's house, the day manager refused to believe the night manager would let me do that, and tried to charge me for the locker and accompanying room for the night I was away. When I refused to pay for the night I checked out, he yelled at me and claimed I never checked out. When I asked how he came to be in possession of my key if I never checked out, he said ok, you checked out, but I never wrote that you checked out in the book. When I tried to explain to him that that wasn't really my problem if he'd written in the book that I was there, said "it is your problem because you never told us". When I explained that I left at night and told the night manager, we were back to square one with him not believing the night manager.
After half an hour, where I got maybe 20 words in, I still refused to pay for the night I checked out. He simply yelled at me "go get your bags, you're not welcome here" and still insisted I pay. I explained to him that I had stayed there for a month, and had hoped to stay there another three weeks. And since the beds were never all full, he was in effect loosing 1000's rupees for the hostel over 200 rupees. He said a few thousand rupee's was "as much as you'd spend on rupees"
In the end here, despite the numerous rules he relied on (which I asked, weren't written down anywhere), there is one rule of the hostel that is written down. That the hotel "may make the check out of any passenger at any time due to misbehavior or at any time because of no reason". ..still doesn't say anything about punching a man though!
When I finally did leave, after he'd picked up my laptop by it's lid, he tried to black mail me saying that "you'll never find a place as cheap as this". When I showed him that I'd submitted this review he threatened me, picked up my laptop and asked me to leave immediately, despite the fact I'd paid for that night.
On the upside, the hostel is close to many of the tourist attractions. ..It's about 20 mins from the main transport hubs of the city by bus, and close buy to some good cheapish food.
Some of the room staff who work there (ie not the managers) are actually very lovely.
The showers are good, and there are no bed bugs at time of writing.
