This four story residence of a former ruling family, now functioning as a character hotel, is centrally located in a quiet residential street and close to the pink city. Our room on the ground floor was furnished with beautiful traditional Indian style furnishings, including twin beds with firm, comfortable mattresses, writing desk, carved overstuffed chair, A/C and ceiling fan, and marble floors. The rather basic bathroom with a shower, no tub, with minimal toiletries, no Kleenex or hair dryer, was spotlessly clean and well lit, as was the room, and all equipment was in working order. Wooden shutters in place of glass windows, which when closed to run the A/C or for privacy, made the room rather dark.
Breakfast was served buffet style in a tranquil little garden, with a minimal choices but sufficient to get one's eyes open. We did not use the restaurant learning in the afternoon upon coming back after a day of sightseeing that a refreshing beer was not available on the premises. A metered toktok taxi took us to The Park Plaza hotel for excellent evening dinners.
The building is beautifully decorated on the outside, and inside rooms and suites convey the life of a bygone era. Admiring the family heirlooms and family pictures in the library led to a chance meeting with the owner, the son of the widowed queen who lives on the top floor. A marble swimming pool was a treat after a day out in 35-40 degree heat. The staff was ever helpful and accommodating. A tip jar at the front desk eliminated the scrambling for tip money at every turn.
