It was a very last minute decision for my husband and I to have our short breakaway in Malacca. For this trip, we just want to try out budget hotel that located in the town area with walking distance to the interest area. It has been a very long time from my last visit to Malacca and I seek information from Tripadvisor page to make a right decision which hotel for us to stay and we have decided to try out one of the budget hotel, Fenix Inn.
With the reputation under ranking number 11 in the hotel list in Malacca, we have confident that this hotel won’t ruin our holiday. Well…I would say, it was ALMOST PERFECT stay for us and what can you expect more from the budget hotel right?
I booked the room online through the hotel website and we booked for Superior room (with window) at the rate of RM97 per night. We check in on Wednesday and check-out on Friday. Having Malacca map or using GPS will be advantage if you not sure how to get there as there is lots of one way street in Malacca. Total 3 hours journey from Kuala Lumpur as we take our own sweet time for our journey. The hotel is easy to locate and the first impression was greet as the location is totally awesome! There is one 24hrs convenience shop just opposite the hotel and the mall just 5 minutes walking.
We totally agree with other’s comment that the complementary Valet Car Service is very helpful and the jockey is very polite and friendly. I personally think that our interactions between the Jockey are much more comparing to the Reception or Housekeeping! Well service guys! We just feel bad when we have to asked them to get our car few times when we back to the hotel and leave not long after that.
Our room was allocated in level 2 via staircase. There isn’t any Café in the hotel, just an internet/business facility next to the lobby area and with charges or RM5 per hour for internet usage.
I would say the room is spacious compare to other budget hotel that we ever stay; just the room set up is not quit right as they place the complementary coffee/tea making facilities under the place where you suppose to hang your cloth (open closet). Flat screen TV will be nice, a small one will good compare to the one that available in the room which looks like the old TV that you normally watch from the general hospital bed and some of the channel is not that clear. Small fridge will be perfect so that the guest can chill their drinks, fruits or food – at least option for rental service.
The bathroom is spacious with hot/cold water standing shower. However, the shower tap kept dripping water throughout, we placed it on the floor to stop the sound. We don’t ask anyone to come and fixed it since we only stay there for 2 nights. But they should check the entire defect before releasing the room to next guest. There is also a leftover 'hair' on the bed and in the bathroom!
Most of the time we were away from our room, and only back to the hotel at night. We were still ok when our room not being make-up when we return in the evening and we did not call for service after that, despite this will be our last night. Unfortunately on our final night, we were disturbed with the drilling sound just next to our room and it’s already midnight! We called down to check with the Reception that the drilling sound is from next building, which we were told that this is a very last minute arrangement by their neighbor. According to the Reception staff, nothing much that they can do and the drilling will be on going till 1am!!
The next morning, we received call from the Reception at 11am sharp asking us what time we going to check-out. We asking for a late check-out till 1pm, but was told to leave the room by 12.30noon the latest!
Upon check-out, there is problem with the billing. As stated in the confirmation, total for 2 night’s room charges will be RM225.90 with taxes included. However we were charge for RM230 instead. When I question the Reception why the charges are difference, she just replies that the extra charges are for taxes. I then produce her with our confirmation email, which clearly stated that the taxes are included in the room charges. The Receptionist then seeks for assistance with one of the chinese guy, not sure if he is one of her senior or manager’s. He then start to asking me if the booking were made through the internet..bla…bla… I then explain to him that the booking was made online through their hotel website. Then only he mention that the extra charges is for the government charges as there is additional tax – Heritage Tax, for RM2 per night will be charge to the guest!
I just don’t understand why it was not being explained much earlier and there is no indication stated in the confirmation email? Even though is just small amount of RM4, it still our money and they should not simply add extra ‘unknown’ charges at the end of our stay! Their staff can’t even elaborate the charges in the first place when we asked!
Well, again…what can you expect from budget hotel. Yes! They have good comments, good recommendations, good reputation from their guest….but they still not perfect and they can improve this to be perfect!
Yes…I’ll be back to this hotel if I’m on ‘budget holiday’. Otherwise the Equatorial Hotel will be another great choice which I would try!
If you planning to stay in this hotel, please expected unexpected things!
Almost perfect…. I would rate 8/10!
Better get a room with window!
