Summary:
An adequate hotel but a long way from the heart of Shanghai.

When and why we stayed:
Stayed for two nights in November 2006 during a Highlights of China tour.

Cost:
The hotel was included in the overall cost of our holiday.

Room:
Our room was modest (Travelodge in the UK standard). The room had a Mini Bar but the convenience store opposite the hotel was much cheaper for beer, water, and snacks. The hotel provided two bottles of complimentary water each day

The Hotel:
The hotel is modern with a plush lobby where there is a bar that serves excellent expensive (30 yuans a cup) L’Avazza coffee. The breakfast buffet was poor offering a limited selection of food and insipid coffee.

Location:
The hotel is situated in Hongqiao, a long (albeit inexpensive taxi ride) from the heart of Shanghai. A taxi from The Bund to the hotel cost 24 yuans. The journey from the Jin Mao Tower cost 40 yuans.

The city:
I have seen the future and it is Shanghai – it is an incredible city. It is very modern but unlike elsewhere in China the past has been preserved. The Bund is super-cool but we couldn't afford to shop in the stores there! The Shanghai Museum in Peoples Square is superb. The Urban Planning Exhibition (opposite the Museum) sounds dull but is super-interesting and worth a visit to view the vast scale model of the Shanghai of the future. Wait until it gets dark to take the lift to the top of Jin Mao Tower to view the city at night. I defy you to be unimpressed.

I travel on business quite a bit, and although this was my first trip to Shanghai, I thought the hotel was an excellent value. Hotel was highly recommended to me by colleagues who have stayed a number of different places in the Hongqiao district and like this place the best. I stayed on one of the Executive floors for 8 nights and had a deluxe suite which consisted of a very nice room with a queen sized bed (rather hard bed though) , my own computer with free internet access, a large living room, two work areas, TV's in both the living room and bedroom, refrigerator, free bottled water (you cannot drink the water in Shanghai) and a large closet for clothes. Everything was spotless and there was plenty of hot water for the shower. Cost was less than $100 per night during the week and $148.00 for weekend nights. There are two restaurants on site which have very good food, although the staff doesn't speak much English. Luckily their menu's had pictures with English translations. Breakfast was a mixture of Asian foods likes noodles or dumplings, congee and miso soup, and some western foods like scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, cereal and yogurt. which was okay but not great.

I would definitely stay there again.

  • Liked — Free internet access, clean, good food on site, spacious suite, great value
  • Disliked — Staff 's English could be better. Location is a little noisy and not too attractive.
  • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — Be sure to get a deluxe suite or executive suite. Worth the extra money

I have just returned from a stay at the RuiTai Hotel in Shanghai and have to say that it was rather disappointing. I would liken it to a Travelodge hotel. Rooms are clean (except the carpets) but very basic and a lot of them face out onto a very noisy main road. Breakfast isn't up to much unless you like cabbage and onions first thing in the morning. You can have an egg cooked for you but other than that there is a choice of veg, salad, cereal (which was stale) or toast. When I tried to cash travellers cheques at reception they had no money and told me to try the following morning but again they were unable to cash them for me. There is a bank directly next door but no access to main hall or atm before 9 am.

If you want a "no frills" hotel then this one's for you but if you want something a little more personal try elsewhere.

  • Liked — Quite conveniently situated in Shanghai
  • Disliked — On a very noisy junction
