The visit to El Poás Volcano is a short trip becuse the park is open until 14:30 hrs only. I travelled from San Jose Costa Rica to el Poas. It is possible to get a bus in the bus station located just in front of "El templo de la Merced" church in San Jose Costa Rica. The bus departs at 8:30 and from there takes you to Alajuhela and from Alajuehla to the national Park Volcan el Poás. It takes to the bus aprox. 2 hrs and 45 minutes to reach the park and the cost is aprox. 7 usd per person for a round trip. Because the park closes at 14:30 hrs there is only one bus departure at 8:30.
The entrance to the park costs 10 usd per person.
It is important to check the weather before depart, the weather in the volcano is very variable and it can rain, it can be sunny or very very cold.
On the way to the volcano, the bus makes an stop in a local shops so the people can buy some breakfast and some local handcrafts. In the park you can walk around two circuits: the main crater circuit and the lagoon circuit. both circuits are nice areas. Mainly, you walk between the forest and there are two places where the crater and the lagoon can be seen and pictures can be taken. It is a recommended attraction but dont expect many places to see the volcano or the lagoon, there is only two terraces where these two attractions can be seen.
