For the most part, Costa Rica - San Jose in particular - is garbage. There is nothing nice about San Jose and the surrounding areas. The slummiest slums of America are gorgeous compared to San Jose. The same goes for Costa Rican cuisine. It is garbage. So imagine my surprise when I arrived in Costa Rica on business for the 3rd time in three months and checked into the TRYP Corobici for the first time. This hotel is NOT garbage. Yes. You’re reading this review correctly. A non-garbage hotel DOES exist in Costa Rica. The hotel is clean and the rooms are comfortable. The breakfast buffet is decent and won't cause too many bathroom visits (although Costa Rican coffee is famous for going in and out of you in less than 2 minutes). I ordered room service a few times and the food was actually delicious. Yes. Delicious. I know what you're thinking. "Delicious cuisine in Garbage Country?" But I swear, I'm not lying. It wasn't garbage. Corobici even houses a very impressive gym. We're talking two floors, a lap pool, a hot tub, all the latest machines, trainers, televisions, and pretty much anything else you'd find in a membership-style gym. In fact, the gym is home to paying members who aren't hotel guests (the hotel is only accessible from the gym to guests with a room key). The hotel is about 15-20 minutes from the airport via taxi. It's also not too far from downtown San Jose - maybe about 10 minutes or so. But really, unless you're into hookers or a fan of being mugged and/or murdered, there’s no reason to go to San Jose. Stay at the Corobici. It's not garbage.
