I stayed here before seeing the rest of Costa Rica. This is a nice hotel with nice people but you MUST ask for a room that is not near the restaurant and bar. The rooms near the restaurant and bar are very loud.

A friend and I stayed at Fleur de Lys in March. We had 2 nights before a kayak trip and 1 night after. Subsequently we had 2 different rooms. The first room was small and only had windows to the interior of the hotel, but it had a ceiling fan. The 2nd room had a balcony and the doors opened to outside. The hotel is chock-a-block of colorful local art and the staff are very friendly. The common areas are beautifully maintained and there is even an internet room where the connection is free. The buffet style breakfast includes traditional fare, great coffee and papaya and pineapple galore. They even offer box breakfasts (free of charge) if you have an early departure for a tour. Happy hours on Fridays and Saturdays feature a three piece band that plays lively music on the front porch. The frozen margaritas are tart and fresh and the best I’ve ever tasted.

We stayed one night at Fleur de Lys and loved the architecture and wooden floors. The room was clean and, while not spacious, had a beautiful balcony (overlooking not-so-beautiful San Jose).

Staff was very helpful and friendly and the hotel is conveniently located near a bank machine, a few good restaurants, and at most a 10 minute walk to downtown.

Our only regret is that we only stayed one night.

Mixed feelings because afterwards I myself would advise to stay at Alejuela rather than San Jose on your C.R. trip. But if you do stay in San Jose, Fleur de Lys is a nice option. We stayed for three single nights (flying in and out S.J.) The first and third night we stayed in a room at the souterrain which gave us a bit of a claustrophic feeling having no window to the outside (only to the hallway).No clean air in these rooms either. Furthermore the first morning our bed was almost shaking by the train that passes the hotel at 05.45 a.m... Make sure not to get that room. The second night we got a REALLY nice room on the third floor: huge, with a bathtub, a sittingroom with bar and decorated with art ('guess the other rooms were all booked, but hey, we didn't complain:-). The upper floors are also furnished and decorated tastefully, paintings of Tico artists everywhere. The staff was very friendly. Breakfast was nice: fresh fruit every morning and on two occasions we also had dinner which was very good indeed and served by a very jolly waiter. We had our luggage stored for free when we went to Corcovado. Overall a pleasant hotel.
