This hotel is absolute heaven. I cannot see how anyone can fault it. It
is far superior to Holiday Inns in the UK. It reeked of class and
luxury. I had come from Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, where I had stayed in
what amounted to a bug-filled shed. So when I arrived here it was
wonderful. I literally jumped for joy when I got into my room. The bed was the
most comfortable I have ever slept in, it had so many pillows and the
sheets were so soft. I fell asleep the minute my head touched the
pillow.
The decor in the room was lovely, it looked really clean, new and
expensive. There were no signs of bugs. I liked the desk with the comfy
chair. A bin in the bedroom came in handy, usually you have to trek to the
bathroom to dispose of rubbish.
The bath was fantastic, the first one I had experienced in Costa Rica.
When I checked in the people at the front desk were friendly. I was
slightly annoyed when they didn't accept my debit card as a guarantee on
using the bar, etc (all other hotels in Costa Rica did). When I got to
my room my minibar was locked and I had to traipse down to the front
desk with a $50 deposit to leave there before they gave me the key for it.
I found this a bit insulting when I had just paid $145 plus tax for
the room (on my debit card).
I was given a voucher for a free drink at the bar when I checked in,
that was a welcome touch. The bar on the second floor is pleasant enough.
It has views onto the park out front, where I hear prostitutes are
supposed to hang out, so I enjoyed watching the goings on. The drinks are
reasonable, $4 for a Gin & Tonic, and really strong, I felt tipsy half
way through my first. There were free peanuts.
I then went up to the restaurant on the 17th floor for a meal. It has
lovely views of the city. The service is very good, the waiter rushed
over to light my cigarette! He also asked if I had any requests for the
piano player. The tables are very nicely laid out. I was a bit
disappointed with my food. I ordered fillets of Seabass in a sauce with seafood.
I got a cod steak in a sauce with bits of shredded crab stick. I
didn't complain because the waiter was lovely and I didn't want to ruin the
atmosphere. After I ordered my food the waiters were talking amongst
themselves and I had the feeling that maybe they were going to tell me
that they were out of seabass, one of them came back and said "was it
seabass you ordered" I said "yes". They obviously didn't want to tell me
they didn't have any and thought it would be better to deceive me with a
fish I don't particularly like. It was their loss as I would have
ordered the lobster if they had said they were out of seabass. I also would
have had several more drinks, coffee and left a big tip. Instead I
left after the cod. The waiter asked if I wanted to see him later, this made me feel a bit awkward. Perhaps they aren't used to females dining alone here.
Apart from the restaurant my stay here was wonderful and I wouldn't
hesitate to return, hopefully for longer than one night.
