This hotel is absolute heaven. I cannot see how anyone can fault it. It
is far superior to Holiday Inns in the UK. It reeked of class and
luxury. I had come from Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, where I had stayed in
what amounted to a bug-filled shed. So when I arrived here it was
wonderful. I literally jumped for joy when I got into my room. The bed was the
most comfortable I have ever slept in, it had so many pillows and the
sheets were so soft. I fell asleep the minute my head touched the
pillow.
The decor in the room was lovely, it looked really clean, new and
expensive. There were no signs of bugs. I liked the desk with the comfy
chair. A bin in the bedroom came in handy, usually you have to trek to the
bathroom to dispose of rubbish.
The bath was fantastic, the first one I had experienced in Costa Rica.
When I checked in the people at the front desk were friendly. I was
slightly annoyed when they didn't accept my debit card as a guarantee on
using the bar, etc (all other hotels in Costa Rica did). When I got to
my room my minibar was locked and I had to traipse down to the front
desk with a $50 deposit to leave there before they gave me the key for it.
I found this a bit insulting when I had just paid $145 plus tax for
the room (on my debit card).
I was given a voucher for a free drink at the bar when I checked in,
that was a welcome touch. The bar on the second floor is pleasant enough.
It has views onto the park out front, where I hear prostitutes are
supposed to hang out, so I enjoyed watching the goings on. The drinks are
reasonable, $4 for a Gin & Tonic, and really strong, I felt tipsy half
way through my first. There were free peanuts.
I then went up to the restaurant on the 17th floor for a meal. It has
lovely views of the city. The service is very good, the waiter rushed
over to light my cigarette! He also asked if I had any requests for the
piano player. The tables are very nicely laid out. I was a bit
disappointed with my food. I ordered fillets of Seabass in a sauce with seafood.
I got a cod steak in a sauce with bits of shredded crab stick. I
didn't complain because the waiter was lovely and I didn't want to ruin the
atmosphere. After I ordered my food the waiters were talking amongst
themselves and I had the feeling that maybe they were going to tell me
that they were out of seabass, one of them came back and said "was it
seabass you ordered" I said "yes". They obviously didn't want to tell me
they didn't have any and thought it would be better to deceive me with a
fish I don't particularly like. It was their loss as I would have
ordered the lobster if they had said they were out of seabass. I also would
have had several more drinks, coffee and left a big tip. Instead I
left after the cod. The waiter asked if I wanted to see him later, this made me feel a bit awkward. Perhaps they aren't used to females dining alone here.
Apart from the restaurant my stay here was wonderful and I wouldn't
hesitate to return, hopefully for longer than one night.

“Great choice for San Jose”

I stayed at this hotel over 5 years ago and based on that experience never went back. However, I made an exception last February and was pleasantly surprised. The whole place has been re-done. The rooms are nicely appointed, spacious enough, and comfortable--up to international Holiday Inn standards. The staff are very pleasant and informed. There's on on-site travel agency/tour desk, too.

The location is excellent if you have to be in downtown San Jose. Business travelers should look here. Breakfast is good.

We checked in to a rude and incompetent staff. Later we brought a local friend to the hotel and they charged us 60 dollars to bring the person to our suite.

I woke up the next morning with bug bites on my legs...
I reported this to the staff, they were rude......

We all checked out and moved to another nearby hotel... Holiday Inn should force these people to remove their name.... it is a joke..

Stayed here at the tail end of a Caravan tour. The hotel is in a very central part of San Jose, easy walking distance to Central Market, museums and other tourist attractions. The room was spacious and clean. Overall, the hotel has no character, but it was more than adequate for the one night stay.

“Most helpful staff in all aspects”

Holiday Inn San Jose Aurola

18 Mar 2008

We were in San Jose, Costa Rica the end of November. The hotel staff was courteous, helpful and beyond accommodating. They spoke English fluently and were more than happy to help in any and every request that we had: and we had many!

There was a travel agency on the lobby floor who arranged a trip to El Arenal (volcano) which was much easier to do by tour just to get our "feet wet' and explore the city and streets enough to rent our own car and explore the rest of the country on our own. We used this particular hotel as a base to be able to travel around the country and return a few days here and there.

If you're in Costa Rica, might as well take off to Panama which is an hour flight and very worthwhile. However, each time we wanted any information at all, the front desk was eager to help and didn't expect anything in return. It was like a home away from home.

The one thing that was a "problem" for me was the fact that there were many rooms that had recently been painted, which was very bothersome for my allergies, making it impossible for me to sleep. The hotel was more than happy to guide us to several rooms and allow us to select one that was to our liking.

A must do in Costa Rica; Manuel Antonio. Jaco is just average, but has a good location for the Canopy Tour. Keep in mind that if you're driving to any of these locations, it is a breathtaking drive, yet getting out of the city is very tricky if you're only used to driving in the U.S. Also, all, and I mean ALL the cars we tried to rent were stick-shift, no automatic in sight; meaning that not everyone can get themselves around.

Last but not least; the people in Costa Rica are absolutely the nicest we have ever encountered, and we've traveled to more than 50 countries so far. They will go out of their way to help you, just because. Another must do: the coffee! It is to die for.
Enjoy.
