Grano de Oro is an excellent hotel. The rooms are very elegantly appointed and while there is no A/C, the breeze and the ceiling fan kept the room pleasantly cool. The statff is great; when American lost our luggage a staff member called the counter throughout the night to get status updates. The gift shop also is an nicely edited collection of Costa Rican souvenirs and very reasonably priced.

Last, the restaurant. If you stay at this hotel, please do not go anywhere else for dinner! The restaurant is richly decorated and the food is equally delicious. The food itself is electic; as an indication, we had foie gras, tuna tataki, steak in a gorganzola sauce and rabbit in a mushroom sauce. Breakfast is excellent as well, as was the service at both meals. I highly recommend staying here!

We stayed here on the last night of a 2 week trip. They've managed to accomplish that often-failed project of converting an old building into a hotel - keeping the charm of the building and making it work as a hotel.

We usually don't eat at the hotel restaurant, but the reviews of restaurants in San Jose indicated that we shouldn't pass up the chance - and it was the best meal of the trip.

This hotel has a beautiful lobby and front area. Rooms are quaint, newly painted. No AC, delux room had windows that open to a courtyard. Overall not bad. No table or chairs in courtyard would have been nice. Nice bathtub. Accomodating staff. We had early flight out and they booked cab night before & wake up call and suggested we order breakfast to pick up at front desk at 4 am. Nice fruit & bagel $10, still cheaper than airport food. We walked to the city center, bars on windows but we were told it was safe. No problems, but didn't feel like the neighborhood you'd stay out and have a beer. No pool & roof top deck, jacuzzi all closed for remodeling, which I'd been told this upon booking, might of chose differently. Staff tried to be helpful, but told us the Central Mercardo was worth checking out. I asked if it were open on Sunday and was told yes, only to find out while walking there it is not. Overall staff tried to be helpful, but don't take advice on when to leave for airport, not sure they've travel abroad and they'll tell you an hour is fine when actually you're 20 min from airport, need to purchase departure tax, check in, security. Don't cut it close, leave 2 hours before flight if early AM flight.

Stayed here on our last night of our 10 day trip to Costa RIca. Loved the hotel (didn't care much for the city). Professional staff. Had our last meal in Costa Rica in the restaurant - AMAZING!!!!! We dropped off our rental car and took a cab to the hotel. They arranged for our transportation to the hotel the next am at 6 am. 20 dollar cab ride from the hotel to the airport.
