We arrived in San Jose and took a taxi to Hotel Don Carlos (cost $25). The hotel was very accommodating (we arrived early, before check in time). (We also stayed here one night upon returning from 5 days in the rainforest.) The hotel is such a wonderful gem in the middle of a city that at times can seem a bit congested and chaotic. The beautifully tiled open courtyard with pool, jacuzzi, water fountain leads into a sitting area with books and magazines and 3 computers for free internet access (and free wi-fi.) There is an amazing breeze coming from the courtyard through the sitting area through the adjoining restaurant. This is a great area to enjoy coffee or a refreshing beer from the bar in the restaurant and escape the city. The restaurant had a delicious menu, I enjoyed the Tilapia Talamanca with hearts of Palm sauce, and the Pio Pio was delish too! Upon check in you receive a voucher for a free tropical juice drink - enjoy it, its very refreshing! The restaurant has a street front porch with tables and we always sat there to enjoy watching the city go by. The included continental breakfast was good too, coffee, tea, cereals, eggs, rice and beans :) The rooms were simple but clean and provided everything we needed. (TV even had english stations out of Miami, FL :) The front desk can also help you arrange local tours (volcano, zip line, San Jose, butterfly far etc.) There is also a great little gift shop with everything fro postcards to jewelery, hammocks, art, books and more! The hotel felt very safe in a city where sometimes every corner had policia. It was rich with history and authenticity for San Jose. We truly enjoyed our stay here, the open sitting areas and very accommodating staff made our stay very relaxing and enjoyable with everything we needed right there and no hassles.
They have a variety of rooms in a variety of locations throughout the hotel. Its is a converted old...
