For our first trip to Costa Rica, we began and ended at the Adventure Inn. They reimbursed the 4 of us $10(total,US) to offset a shuttle they ran from the airport to the hotel. We were able to then take a free shuttle the next morning to pick up our rental car through Tricolor rental.

The staff and all email correspondence received from Adventure Inn was extremely helpful and informative. They offered suggestions on our travel plans and stressed that if we needed any help, to please let them know.

Free access to Internet was available in a common room on the second floor. They had a small workout fitness room and a hot tub available. There was also a nice little restaurant inside the hotel which had a bar, tv, some traditional plates, snacks, and desserts. The waitress we had on our last night, Laticia, was a doll and always smiling.

Rooms were very nice and clean. Complimentary coffee, and a free breakfast were included in our deal.

Again, I would highly recommend this place. The reception folks spoke English well (but also let me struggle and practice my broken Spanish!), called us a taxi when we needed it to go out to dinner (after we returned our car). Great customer service.

Thank you.

I have a business in Costa Rica and I found the Adventure Inn through a mutual contact there in San Jose. I had been looking for accommodations for my guests to stay on the beginning or end of their Costa Rica stay with us at Safari Surf School.
Obviously I needed to check the accommodations out myself in order to feel comfortably with referring my guests to their hotel.
So...I must say I was extremely pleased with the staff (super freindly and always smiling- a very important aspect for me!), the rooms that I got to see and stay in were very clean, comfortable, and well thought out. The bar was nice and had a great selection of drink options and a great staff as well.
Overall I will have absolutely no problem recommending a stay at the Adventure Inn to my surf school clients. This is the type of hotel I like as it provides the "flavor" of Costa Rica which most of my guests are coming to CR to experience, along with the true "Pura Vida" vibe!

“Loved It!”

Adventure Inn

5 Jul 2008

Stayed here with my husband and son at the beginning of a three-week trip to Costa Rica. Very close to the airport. The staff was friendly and as helpful as could be. The rooms were clean, and the jacuzzi downstairs was a nice hangout after tramping through the city. The on-site restaurant, the Moon Glow, was very helpful preparing allergen-free meals for our son, who has multiple allergies. Will stay here again.

“overrated and run-down but OK for overnight stay”

Adventure Inn

This hotel is very overrated. The area is nice but the rooms are very dark - almost no natural light during the day and have a general run down apperance. The restaurant was also quite spooky. The advertised "all you can eat full american breakfast" didn't come anyware close to the average breakfast we had in the other 4 hotels we stayed at during our trip in Costa Rica. Especially bad were the "natural juices" - made of almost entirely water. It was a total disappointment that the trip we booked by e-mail actually wasn't booked for us when we arrived (I guess this is why they have a big sign at the reception desk saying you need to check whether your tours are booked upon arrival). For us it was too late - so we were stranded for the whole day in San Jose with nothing to do. It was quite unpleasant that we actually had to pay the 16% tax on the discount we recieved as well as on the 10 USD that got off our bill to pay to the taxi for the trip to the airport. Being a tax consultant it was clear to me that this is just another way for the owner to make some extra bucks. And the worst part is that obviously the guy at the reception desk knew the problem and probably was confronted with it many times but his comment was - that this is the order of the management. Overall if you only need a hotel for overnight on the way back - it is OK. You even get an extra benefit - you will find yourself very willing to go home the next day.

Management Response

I am sorry to hear that this guest did not have a very good stay with us. I honestly don't know what they mean by the place being run down since the building and the facilities are all new and much of the remodeling we have done is less than 2 years old, rooms are spacious and we try to keep everything in the best shape we can. With only 34 rooms, our maintenance man still has a full-time job and he is constantly finding small things to do.

I especially don't know why they found the restaurant "spooky". Many of our guests enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant and come back to stay with us again and again. I just went into the restaurant and I counted twelve lights above the tables and in the ceiling, not to mention the natural sunlight coming in from the solarium and along one whole side of the restaurant. I did not see anything dark, run down or spooky. As for the fruit juice, everything is made from real fruit. The cooks cut up real pieces of fresh fruit such as papaya, pineapple and local fruits such as cas, carambola, guanabana or tamarindo every morning. They then mix this pureed fruit with water and sugar, which you need to do or the juices would be extremely strong and even bitter (like the carambola). We even put fresh cut fruit on all of our breakfast plates. This morning we served tamarindo and cas juice. If for any reason you want a type of juice that is not being served, just ask the waitress to make you up a glass and if we have it, we'll make it for you just how you want it. The other items on the breakfast menu consist of Pancakes, French toast, "Breakfast Scrambler" and omelets all served with fresh fruit, crisp bacon, hash browns or the famous Costa Rican "gallo pinto", coffee and toast.

I definitely understand this guests complaint about the tour not being booked and I know it is very frustrating when you want to get out and do something on your vacation and you can't, especially on your vacation. We have a sign at the front desk that reminds people to reconfirm any tours or car rentals that they have with us because all of the tours and car rentals are done by third party companies. We do not do them directly. We merely make the arrangements for our guests as a free service, however we cannot be held responsible if for any reason the tour/car company loses your reservation or wrote some of the information down wrong, which is the reason we have the sign reminding people to reconfirm any reservations in the first place. However, in this case, it was partially our fault as well. The guest requested a tour by e-mail the afternoon of the day before. Unfortunately, I did not get to the e-mail on time before the tour company closed that day, which is why they did not pick them up the following morning. I would recommend to anyone reading this that if you wish to take a tour or book a car rental to please try to let us know 24 hours before (if possible) so that we have time to contact the tour company during regular business hours and so that they have time to send us back a confirmation. I try to answer the e-mails as quickly as I can, however there are times when I may not get to them for a few hours.

As for the taxi, we discount the $10 that it costs you off your bill. We do not discount extra tax on top of this $10 because you do not pay tax on top of this amount. It is already included in the price of the taxi. If you were charged for some sort of tax on top of the price of the taxi, we would discount this as well. Basically we discount whatever is on your taxi receipt, which is exactly what we have done.

We stayed at the Adventure Inn on our 1st and last nights in Costa Rica since the hotel is very close to the airport.
We really enjoyed the hotel. The rooms were clean and spacious and the way the hotel is laid out, we felt that our rental car was very secure.
The hotel also has a nice little restaurant and bar on location with good food and great service.
We will definitely stay there on our next trip in and out of San Jose.
