We have just returned from staying for four fabulous nights at the Pacific Resort Aitutaki on the island of Aitutaki, a 40 minute flight North of the main island of Rarotonga. The resort is set on the sunset side of the main island on the Aitutaki lagoon, with all rooms set out on the beachfront, within 50 feet of the waters edge.
From the time of our arrival at the small island airport, where we were greeted by one of the hotel staff with leis made out of gardenia flowers, to when we left, farewelled by the hotel manager, the staff at the resort were unfailingly polite, attentive and anticipated all of our needs.
The resort has a spa at which all the women of our party of eight spent a number of hours pampering themselves, an infinity edge pool perfectly positioned for sunbaking and within 10 yards of a well appointed bar (with all the usual amazing cocktails), and two restuarants, both of which had amazing food that was reasonably priced and focused on fresh seafood with local fruits and vegetables. For those who desired more traditional fare such as steak or chicken, these dishes were presented with flair and attention to detail with the garnishes and side dishes also being representative of the very best traditions of silver service.
The rooms that our party stayed at all had fantastic marble-lined bathrooms, with double sinks and a shower that had real pressure and unlimited hot water. The beds were delightfully comfortable king size with a fan above plus air-conditioning for those that needed it. Best of all, they all came with large balconies with couches and comfortable chairs, perfectly positioned for sunset cocktails and an unobstructed view of the lagoon and surf break at the reefs edge. Three stairs down, past an outside shower, was the beach, with white coral sand, shade from the palm trees and two dedicated sunloungers for each room. Beach towels were also provided and changed daily, along with snorkeling gear - all of us used this gear constantly as the water was crystal clear, turquiose blue and with fantastic fishlife and coral within yards of the waters edge.
While at the resort, we also took advantage of some tours recommended by the front desk staff, to tour the 42 km lagoon (where Survivor Cook Islands was filmed), go deep sea fishing for a morning (we caught 2 wahoo) and generally explore one of the most beautiful spots I have been to, akin to any of the lagoons in the Maldives. The tours were everything the staff at the hotel said they would be and the locals running them invariably friendly and enthusiatic.
I cannot fault this resort or the island- not only is the location unbelievable but the local staff absolutely made the trip. We will be back.
