from my trip blog:

We left for Homer and encountered rain all the way there. We stopped in Soldotna for coffee and a snack and arrived at our hotel, The Land’s End Resort & Spa, about 2:30 PM. We were glad to have some time before we had to head out for out trip on the Danny J. to Halibut Cove at 4 PM.

Our joy was short lived. As it turned out the hotel had a check-in time of 4 PM and the best they could do was to maybe have us in our 2 bedroom suite at 3:30 PM. The attitude of the staff was quite rude. We did get our room key at 3:30 PM, but the room was horrible. We had been told we would have a beach view suite and indeed one room did have a balcony with a beach view. The other room was behind the first room (which closed with a sliding door that did not keep out noise*) and had no view and no windows and no air! (It did have a tiny fan that was useless) It was more like a jail or an inside cabin on a ship and felt like a sauna. The only sink was out in the open in this room and the door to the tiny bathroom was also in this room. The first "suite" (yeah, right) we were given had one bed in each room, even though we had been explicit about the absolute necessity for two beds in one of the rooms. This was not a good thing to find out after lugging all our heavy bags up a steep ramp. No, the Land’s End Resort & Spa did not have anyone to help with our bags. We asked that we be given 2 rooms due to the false promise of a beach view suite, but had no luck. We were given a room where the jail had 2 beds. Needless to say I was livid!

*By way of explanation, we always need two separate rooms or two bedrooms (with doors that close) when we travel, as one of us sleeps with the TV on and snores, while another of us needs absolute quiet in order to sleep. This is always made extremely clear to our travel agent!

Be sure you understand that the Lands End suite is not sweet.

Thank you for your feedback and for taking the time to comment on your stay with us. We here at Land’s End Resort do our absolute best to ensure that our guests receive the highest possible level of customer service as well as top notch accommodations.

Customer satisfaction is our top priority. We are always receptive to hearing constructive criticism that helps us work toward improving that which is deemed unsatisfactory by our guests and colleagues.

July is the busiest time of year for us here and with an almost daily full house; we have very little time to turn over all the rooms. This is why we have a very strict and long standing 4 PM check-in time. This information should be given by the reservationist at the time the reservation is made as well as being available on your confirmation and our website. I am pleased to hear that we were able to get you into your room at least a little earlier than 4 PM so you could catch the Danny J and make the trip to Halibut Cove. There is also always the option to put in an early check-in request so that we know in advance of your plans to we can do our best to get you into your room with enough time to settle in before having to depart on your excursion.

We do have people who are available to move baggage to your room for you, but it is upon request only. We do not have a permanent bell hop available. We also have baggage carts available for customers to use at their convenience. Our apologies for not making this clear during your stay.

With regards to your complaints about our front desk clerk; our high quality of customer service pertaining to our guests and their interaction with Land’s End Resort from arrival to departure is continuing to positively evolve as we hope that all guests will feel secure in the knowledge that Land’s End Resort will cater to our guests for a quality experience.

We are very sorry that the Starboard Bay Suites did not meet your expectations or requirements. We have a large variety of room accommodations and style which are all outline, described, with photos and virtual tours online. Let’s find a better fit for your needs with your next stay.

Baggage handling, precise room descriptions, time management, and courteous, informed staff are all supremely important facets to our continued success and are always at the forefront of Land’s End Resort mission statement.

In closing, we would like to thank you for staying with us at Land’s End Resort.

Tiny Room but a Very Good Restaurant

This is a decent family owned hotel right on the water in Homer. We stayed here for one night during our driving tour of the Kenai Peninsula.

We arrived here a little after check in time. Our room was ready and we had a Port City room which we reserved months in advance. The room was just around the corner from the reception desk. That was fine but the room itself was another story.

It was small! How small? I’m talking tiny! Smallest room I ever stayed in and I’ve been in hotels all over the world. We had a double bed that barely fit me and my wife and the pull out bed underneath was not very comfortable when each of us tried it. The room was so small that we ended up leaving most of our luggage in the car and used our airline carry-on bags to bring in only what we needed. We agreed that since it was only for one night, we would manage. That we did. Somehow, we slept through the night on the double bed.

The bathroom was large but was full of large hand rails as if the place was designed for someone who was disabled. We didn’t mind that much. Just a comment that made me wonder if our tiny room was meant for someone who was handicapped. If so, that explains a lot.

The room was clean with no unusual smells. The ceiling had a little water damage most likely from a storm over the winter. The décor was a bit dated but in decent shape.

Our room faced the parking lot. The only good thing about that was I could see if our rental car was still there. It was a bit warm in the room as the sun was out and the only way to get air was to open the windows of which one worked. This provided some cooling air but also a lot of noise from the parking lot.

Rather then try and relax with all that noise and on a bed that barely fit us, we went for a walk on the bay right behind the hotel. This is nice and is even better if the sun is out, which it was. We also talk a walk up the spit where there some places to look around.

The thing that is good here is the food. It has the best restaurant in town and a full bar. We enjoyed an outstanding halibut dinner. The restaurant also has nice views of the bay. We skipped breakfast here the following morning as it was too expensive. There are other, cheaper options on the way out of town.

There is a small gift shop whose main business appears to be its coffee. There is also a tour desk for trips in the local area but that was closed while we were there.

The staff we encountered were nice and friendly. This is a family owned hotel and it appears that their training is very good.

If I had known, I would have spent the money and gotten a bit bigger room. It was only for a night and we went on the cheap. Don’t be fooled by the pictures on their website, the rooms are smaller than that.

We managed in the small room but to be honest, my cabin on Carnival Cruise lines the week before was much larger. Stick to the larger rooms in the main building. I wish we had done that. Whatever you do, make sure you have dinner in the restaurant. You won’t be disappointed.

Dear Guest,
Thank you so much for taking the time to craft such a well written and honest review. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us, especially your dining experience. The Chart Room Restaurant staff was ecstatic to hear of your review as they have been working extremely hard to provide guests with the finest dining on the Kenai Peninsula.
As far as your accommodation situation, we definitely agree that the Port City rooms are a bit on the small side. They are by far our smallest and most economical room. But we feel that they are a great value, at just $85 a night, for those guests that are looking for the best deal in town, and still want to stay out on the very end of the spit so they can be immersed in the world class scenery. For any guests needing more space we have a huge variety of different room types with countless bed configurations. We aren’t your normal cookie-cutter resort, as we offer over 30 different accommodation types. These other choices include: our extremely popular Midship Bayside rooms that come with 2 double beds or 1 king bed, with a view of the bay and balcony deck; our Midship Lofts with 1 King upstairs and a double bed downstairs; our Starboard Bayside which are huge, 2 room suites that come with a variety of different bedding configurations; and lastly, our luxury lodge homes which are like mini-mansions that come with anywhere from 1 bedroom to 4 bedrooms.
I hope that you will choose to stay with us again on your next visit. Thank you again for your time and feedback.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to comment on your visit with us. While most guests have a wonderful stay at our resort, we are always looking for ways to improve to insure that our visitors have the experience of a lifetime. We were surprised to hear that the front desk personnel had a poor attitude, and even more shocked that you had an unclean bathroom. I can assure you that both of these are far from ordinary and are not in any way representative of the high level of service we provide to our guests on a daily basis. We pride ourselves on our customer service and accommodation cleanliness.
We are evaluating and replacing the chairs that need to be reupholstered. Also, we are coming up with ways to better promote and direct people to our world class Raven’s Nest Spa, which is right here on the property just seconds away from our hot tub, restaurant, and lodging.
We are sorry that you did not enjoy your recent stay and hope that you give us a second chance to provide you with the high quality of service that most all of our guests have come to expect from the finest accommodations on the Kenai Peninsula, Land’s End Resort.

This hotel is at the very end of the spit. We stayed in a newer two bedroom Starboard sutie. The rooms were very spacious with a nice size mini frig, small dining table and balcony. The view was spectacular. The hotel appears to be a landmark in this interesting little town. You can walk to the ferry, gift shops , restaurants and boat harbor. We enjoyed fishing off the shore behind the hotel. We caught lots of pollock and some flounder. There were starfish scattered around at low tide. We would stay here if we visited Homer again as we prefer to stay on the spit rather than in town.

Also enjoyed a 1/2 day Halibut charter with Fish Connection. They had a 50' boat which was larger than many of the other charters. A restaurant called Captain Patties cooked some of the Halibut we caught- it was wonderful! The Islands & Oceans Visitor Center is worth a visit and it's FREE. Take a drive on the Skyline Rd and East End for some great views. Wireless access was available and a freezer to store your fish.

The hotel is a mix of older and newer rooms. I would reccommend the newer suites with a view. I understand the older rooms were much smaller and a little dated.

For the money, you'd expect a whole lot more. In our non-smoking room, the comforter had a hole in it the size of a quarter. The view was okay, nowhere near what we expected. The room was ok but not very comfortable. The sofa was awful to sit on. I would never recommend this place to anyone I liked.

The restaurant there was very good though. The prime rib was good and the service in the restaurant was outstanding. I would recommend this restaurant.

Dear guest,
Thank you for taking the time to submit a review of our property. We strive to make everyone’s experience here at Land’s End an excellent one.
We are so pleased that you enjoyed the Chartroom Restaurant.
We take feedback very seriously and agree that our pull-out couches are a compromise when it comes to straight comfort. We’re looking for a better solution.
We have to admit, however, you are the first to describe the view as only “OK”. Unparalleled and breathtaking are words we hear most frequently. The unobscured, beachfront view, if seemingly impaired, can only stem from a lack of appeal of the vista itself, of glaciers and mountain peaks beyond.
Thirty five percent of our business is generated from repeat customers and referrals, so your recommendation is important to us.
Thank you for your valuable comments.
